A Dangerous Shift: Gen Z's Alarmingly Traditional Views on Women

Background: A Shocking Discovery

I have long believed that progress is a natural trajectory, particularly regarding gender equality. Yet, startling new research conducted in 29 countries, including the UK, unveils a disquieting perspective. Almost a third of Gen Z men assert that a wife should always obey her husband, while a similar percentage contends that husbands should have the final say in crucial decisions. What has changed, and why are we witnessing this alarming regression?

This survey, published by Ipsos and the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at King's College London, may seem reminiscent of bygone eras, but the disturbing reality is that these views are prevalent among young men today. The question arises: How did we arrive at this juncture, where outdated beliefs seem to gain traction once more?

The Gravity of Traditional Masculinity

As I delve deeper into these findings, they evoke memories of the 1970s—a time when similar attitudes would provoke laughter and derision. Today, however, the landscape appears different. The stark statistics suggest a masculinity crisis among young men in the UK, echoing sentiments that should have been left in the past.

Generational Divide: A Feminist Perspective

Gap Between Gen Z Men and Women

Encouragingly, there's a notable disparity between the views of Gen Z men and women. Fewer than one-fifth (18%) of Gen Z women agree with the notion that they should obey their husbands. This presents a glimmer of hope amid a troubling backdrop. Furthermore, it highlights a generational divide; Baby Boomers, my cohort, exhibit more progressive views on issues ranging from sexual initiation to women's independence.

When I evaluate the attitudes of women from both generations, it's clear that many share a commitment to gender equality. Despite having faced systemic challenges, such as being told in school that I couldn't pursue A-level economics because it was deemed a 'girls' school,' I experienced a different world compared to what Gen Z women encounter today. Most Baby Boomer women reject the idea that self-sufficiency is unattractive, indicating a fundamental divergence in perspective between the sexes.

Contextualizing Economic Pressures

One cannot ignore the intersection of economic factors with social attitudes. The Baby Boomer generation, characterized by optimism and fewer burdens (such as crippling student debt), managed to shape more equitable views on gender. Conversely, Gen Z has grown up under the specter of financial strain—from the global financial crisis to today's exorbitant tuition fees and a pandemic-affected job market.

These pressures may drive some young men to seek solace in traditional gender norms—a retreat to established stereotypes rather than challenging them. During times of uncertainty, it's not uncommon for individuals to cling to idealized versions of the past, which, in this case, is detrimental for women.

Online Influences and Social Interaction

Moreover, the impact of online culture cannot be overlooked. With 43% of Gen Z men asserting that they should embody a physically tough persona, there lies an increasing adherence to rigid gender binaries. These pressures are exacerbated by online communities where misogynistic figures, like Andrew Tate, cultivate damaging ideologies that prey upon insecurities and foster resentment towards women.

The Implications of Regression

“Violence against women is at epidemic levels in this country. The connection between attitudes and behavior is undeniable.”

The fact that these regressive attitudes persist is not merely a matter of opinions. They resonate directly with the grim reality of violence against women, which remains alarmingly prevalent in the UK. The tragic case of Sarah Everard serves as a reminder of systemic failures within law enforcement that contribute to this crisis. As I reflect on this, I'm struck by the urgency of nurturing young women's confidence to challenge harmful stereotypes and misogyny.

Conclusion: Call to Action

It is clear that while a small minority of Gen Z men may cling to outdated beliefs about gender roles, they have the potential to influence narratives and behaviors. Together, we must confront these views head-on, aiming to empower young women who are willing to challenge the status quo. We stand on the precipice of significant change, where exposing and confronting misogynistic narratives could foster a more equitable future for all.
