Peter Cunnah, the voice behind the iconic 'Things Can Only Get Better', has had a career filled with chart-topping hits and unrelenting fame. Coming to Terms with His Origins

Born in a mother-and-baby home in Belfast in 1966, Peter was adopted shortly after. His upbringing in Londonderry was sheltered and loving, but the shadow of his unknown origins loomed for decades. As Cunnah recounted to BBC Radio Foyle's North West Today programme, hearing the words "You know son, you're not my son, somebody else has given you to me," from his mother was a moment that shook him to the core.

“It was mind-blowing; trying to process it, I thought, 'that's all right, Mum, you're my real mammy,'” he shared, showing an optimistic resilience even in the face of such monumental news.

A Journey Beyond the Music

Fast forward to the early '90s, Cunnah was on a meteoric rise with D:Ream, but while he enjoyed the limelight, personal demons began to unfold. Drug and alcohol addiction clouded his trajectory. Yet amidst the party scene, he was also uncovering secrets from his past.

A pivotal moment in his quest for identity came in 1991 when his adoptive mother received a letter from his biological mother, Ann McCrea. This unexpected correspondence unveiled the missing pieces of Cunnah's family story and prompted a thrilling exploration into his roots.

The Struggle to Find His Father

However, the search for his biological father would turn into a more complicated odyssey. His mother had told him to expect a man named Patrick Dusky—a name Cunnah later discovered was merely a stage name, leaving him with little more than a ghost to chase.

The quest to locate Patrick took on a modern twist, as detective work by a sister-in-law eventually led to a social media profile. But reaching out initially yielded nothing—"I emailed him and got crickets," Cunnah remarked, reflecting on the challenge of initiating such a monumental conversation.

A Family Reunion

Despite the hurdles, persistence paid off. When Cunnah finally connected with his father, emotions ran high. He spoke of the surreal experience as he arrived at Patrick's doorstep in Barnsley, Yorkshire: "We both snivelled a bit" when they embraced.

Family Ties in the Music Industry

To Cunnah's surprise, his familial connections revealed a rich musical heritage: His father, Patrick, was a touring musician, and his half-sister Philippa is a celebrated Christian artist.

“We had an incredible laugh and tears together,” he reminisced, acknowledging how these family interactions further solidified his belonging in the world of music. His half-brother, Stuart Zender, is a former bassist for Jamiroquai, reinforcing the idea that music truly runs in their blood.

A New Chapter Unfolds

Peter Cunnah now lives in the seaside village of Fahan, County Donegal, continuing to create music that resonates not just with the public, but with his newfound identity. His journey underscores the importance of addressing and reconciling with one's past to fully embrace the present.

“Knowing both the people who brought me into the world has made my life more complete,” he said, reflecting on the incredible depth of emotions experienced throughout this journey. Things have only gotten better for this pop star, both personally and professionally.
