As the Jamestown High School boys basketball season launches, it brings a mix of excitement and introspection. Head coach Tim Ranum anticipated two stars to lead his squad into battle, but fate has left him with just one key contributor: the determined Edison Walters. Meanwhile, teammate Madden Skunberg faces the sidelines, recovering from a torn ACL—an injury sustained in an open gym that has him feeling the weight of missed opportunities.

“I tore my ACL at an open gym,” Skunberg shared. “I will not be playing this year because I just had knee surgery.”

Edison Walters: The Player on the Rise

This season now rests heavily on the shoulders of Walters, a gritty junior who's shown tremendous promise. Returning from a collarbone injury, he embodies the spirit of resilience that defines high school sports. In his sophomore year, Walters stepped up, averaging 7.7 points per game and making pivotal plays in key moments. He exploded for 14 points in the second half and overtime of the WDA Tournament play-in game last season, showcasing his prowess when it mattered most.

“I got back on the court the day after the WDA tournament,” Walters explained, radiating enthusiasm. “I wanted to keep building off the experience I got last season, so I started working immediately.” His commitment paid off as he immersed himself in training—focused on shooting, ball-handling, strength, and conditioning.

“I'm excited for this season and proud of the work our team has put in,” said Walters. “Blue Jay fans can expect me to play hard, compete and impact the game in multiple ways.”

Family Ties and Lasting Influences

Family influence plays a significant role in the development of these athletes. Walters credits his older brother Mason, a professional player in Switzerland, for helping him elevate his game to new heights. “Mason has been a huge influence,” he said. “He really helped me take a big step this offseason—pushing me, training with me, and showing me what a real work ethic looks like.” The values imparted by family members run deep, and both athletes are dedicated to carving their own identities on the court.

The Unseen Impact of Injuries

Injuries are all too common in athletics, yet their impact extends beyond the physical. Skunberg, who played 22 games last year and averaged 5.3 points per game, emphasizes how training together allowed him to grow in a heated competitive environment. “Competing with Edison is very fun because he is always looking to win, making you have to be on top of your game,” he remarked.

However, the loss of Skunberg to injury reshapes the existing team dynamics. Walters acknowledged the gap left by Skunberg's absence, valuing the camaraderie they shared. “Competing with Madden is great,” he pointed out. “He's strong and physical and pushes me every day.”

The Blue Jays opened their competitive season against Grand Forks Central on December 5, though results were still pending. Fans can mark their calendars for December 12, when Jamestown hosts its first home game against Fargo South. The team promises a season infused with speed, toughness, and an unshakeable brotherhood.

Walters captured this sentiment perfectly: “Our biggest strengths are our speed and brotherhood.
