A Season to Remember: Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Volleyball Shines Bright

Last season was truly hard to beat for the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder, culminating in their first-ever Region 1 Tournament Championship. This significant achievement marked their first appearance at the NDHSAA Class B State Tournament, a moment that fans and players alike will cherish forever.

Under the guidance of head coach Jacie Connell, the team approached this milestone with determination and confidence. Connell expressed her steadfast belief, sharing with her husband, "I had it in my head all season long that this team had what it takes to make it to State." This season wasn't just about winning; it was about belief, grit, and the unwavering support from the community, and every member of the squad delivered.

The Title Match

The Thunder faced the formidable Langdon Area/Edmore-Munich in the 2025 Class B State Championship, marking their first-ever shot at a state title. Despite a hard-fought match ending in a loss (25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 16-25, 12-15), the sense of pride and accomplishment remained palpable in the air.

"I was so impressed with my team in the state title game," Connell reflected. "They played with calmness, heart, and so much determination."

Stars of the Season

The Thunder had four returning major players: Brynn Sorenson, Shayla Martin, Violet Bohl, and Destiny Opp. Though they lost some impactful seniors, their dedication shone through. Sorenson noted, "Since last year, our team was determined to get back to the state tournament. We worked hard in the offseason and stayed focused on getting better every day to make that goal possible." Their finish of 20-4 overall and 8-1 in Region 1 showcases their relentless spirit.

A Historic Performance

While they didn't clinch the title, the Thunder didn't come away empty-handed. Two players, including Sorenson, earned All-State honors, marking a crowning achievement for the athlete.

Sorenson was named to the 2025 Class B NDHSCA Volleyball First-Team All-State team on November 24 and also snagged the prestigious NDHSCA POWERade Outstanding Senior Athlete award. She expressed her fulfillment, saying, "Winning the NDHSCA and POWERade Outstanding Senior Athlete of the year award was fulfilling and solidified all the hard work I have put in over the years."

A Legacy Written

In her senior season, Sorenson amassed an impressive 626 kills, 717 digs, 27 blocks, and 33 aces. Her four-year career culminated in a staggering total of 1,667 kills and 2,504 digs. Sorenson's stellar performance not only solidifies her legacy at M/P-B but also sets a benchmark for future athletes.

Looking Ahead

Even as the team transitions with graduating seniors, hope remains. Junior Violet Bohl joins Connell for one last shot. Bohl, who was also named to the all-state team, boasts a career assist total that speaks volumes of her contribution. "The future of M/P-B volleyball is bright and I can't wait to see what they accomplish next year," said Sorenson, reminding us all that this legacy is far from over.
