Just last week, at only 20 years old, Aamilah Aswat made a significant mark in equestrian sports by becoming the first black female British jump jockey to win a UK horse race. This momentous victory comes just three months after she made history in another way: becoming the first black female jockey to compete in a race in Britain.

Aswat's journey began at the tender age of five at St James City Farm in Gloucester, an inner-city stables that nurtured her burgeoning passion for riding. The pivotal moment, she recalls, came when she raced a pony at Cheltenham, igniting a lifelong dream.

“That is still the dream, a distant one, but still very much the dream,” Aswat told BBC Sport, reflecting on her aspiration to ride in the Grand National.

Additionally, the financial backing required to afford a professional ride complicates her aspirations. “I ring up an owner and say 'I've got this really good young black girl who wants to ride. Will you let them ride your horse?' Well, I mean, frankly, you're paying the same for her as you would do for [reigning champion jockey] Sean Bowen or anybody else. It's quite a difficult one,” Bailey explained, emphasizing the hurdles faced by underrepresented riders like Aswat.

Aswat has not only overcome her own hurdles but also aims to pave the way for future generations. She was inspired by Khadijah Mellah, the first British Muslim woman to win a horse race in Britain. Aswat said, “It made me believe in myself even more. It feels good for myself but hopefully inspires others.”
