As he sits across from me via Zoom in a sun-drenched French cafe, Ludwig's calm demeanor belies the whirlwind of projects that have made him one of Hollywood's most compelling character actors. 'Shout out to (writer and director) Gary Ross for that,' Ludwig says with a grin. 'I actually think without that scene and the scene that happened just prior, where I have this little monologue that was written on the day by Gary, I don't think that character would have been nearly as memorable as it became because if you watch the film, I'm not in it a ton. It's just that character had such a presence, and I owe so much of that to Gary.'

The impact of that scene, and his portrayal, has stuck with him – literally. He jokes that he still gets recognition for it, even decades later. 'That was kind of what set me up at the beginning. It kind of teed me up for being able to work consistently in this business.' The franchise is still going strong, with the next installment, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, finally arriving. 'I just saw the trailer yesterday,' he says. 'They invited me to the premiere, and I said, “If you fly me out, I'll come.” I literally turned to my wife and I said, “I can't believe they're still making these. It's amazing. It's crazy.”'

White Lotus: A Golden Ticket

With Unabomber now behind him, Ludwig is back on the set of The White Lotus, Season 4, filming in Cannes and Monaco – where he's been having a bit of a celebrity moment. 'The only thing cooler than having a film premiere at Cannes Film Festival is shooting 'The White Lotus' at the Cannes Film Festival,' he says with a laugh.

He recalls meeting George Clooney at the Hôtel du Cap, where they discussed the show – not that he's sharing any spoilers. 'He's going to have to wait like everyone else,' Ludwig winks, his voice dropping conspiratorially. The new season is reportedly more extravagant than ever, with a rivalry between two filmmaking teams competing for the top prize at Cannes. When asked if he'd do another shocking scene – like last season's incestuous moment – Ludwig laughs and says, 'My first question to Mike was, “Who am I doing that to?” Obviously joking but I was like, “Just tell me.” [I'll do it] happily.' That's the kind of playful confidence that makes him such a compelling presence in any project.
