It was a painful consideration, especially after a disappointing loss to New Mexico. However, the stakes heightened as they faced off against a familiar foe, and Hale knew that seizing this opportunity against the Grand Canyon University (GCU) Lopes could invigorate a struggling lineup.

A Narrow Victory at Hi Corbett Field

On Tuesday night at Hi Corbett Field, the Wildcats emerged victorious, edging GCU 5-4, marking their first midweek victory of the season after stumbling through four previous contests. This much-needed win showcased the firepower and competitive spirit of Arizona baseball.

“They just seem to come down here, or when we're up there, they're very comfortable,” Hale pointed out, referring to the Lopes' confidence against his crew. He recognized the necessity for his team to reclaim home-field advantage. “We have to feel like it's our game to win.”

Roster Highlights

Arizona came out swinging, building a solid 5-0 lead after just three innings. The offensive fire started with a solo homer from Tony Lira, supported by three RBIs from catcher Roman Meyers, and an RBI from the ever-improving Mathis Meurant, who recorded the first 3-hit game of his career. However, the Wildcats left several scoring opportunities on the table, leaving the bases loaded twice.

“We had a lot of opportunities to add on,” Hale said, emphasizing the missed chances. “Two strike at-bats are getting better, but we've got to do more damage with guys on base. We just have to get that 2-out hit.”

As they navigated the later innings, their inability to extend the lead allowed GCU to claw back into contention. The Lopes reduced the deficit with a pair of two-run homers, drawing dangerously close at 5-4. In a nail-biting eighth inning, with the tying run on third base, reliever Patrick Morris managed to escape the jam with a critical inning-ending strikeout.

In the ninth, Garrett Hicks was back on the mound despite a rocky outing just days prior against Texas Tech. This time, he allowed a two-out double but demonstrated his composure to seal the win and earn his second save of the season. “Those are big outs for us,” Hale noted, reflecting on the significance of the game's conclusion. “A run-rule game is great, but maybe winning a game like that helps everybody.”

The victory was also notable for Jack Lafflam, a true freshman who took the mound for four innings. Despite conceding a two-run homer, Lafflam shone brighter than his previous outings, exhibiting poise, as he didn't walk a single batter and struck out two. His impressive performance came after entering the game with a staggering 18.00 ERA.

“It was definitely just trusting my stuff … trusting my defense,” Lafflam reflected, acknowledging the teamwork that let him thrive. “I was able to throw in the zone consistently and trust that I'm gonna get outs behind me.”
