ASU Volleyball Soars to Sweet 16: A Journey of Resilience

Arizona State volleyball is back in the Sweet 16 for the second time in three seasons. The Sun Devils showcased their strength as they defeated Utah State in four exhilarating sets (25-15, 25-18, 22-25, 25-15) at Desert Financial Arena on December 5. This victory not only highlights their skills on the court but symbolizes a deeper journey of resilience and ambition.

“It was really special for me,” said senior outside hitter Bailey Miller, reflecting on the win. “I was one of the only ones last year when we got upset (in the second round), so I think going into it, all the girls just wanted to recognize all the girls who didn't get to go to the Sweet 16 last year and took it seriously. It was really special.”

Last season's painful second-round exit weighed heavily on the minds of this year's roster, making their current success even sweeter.

Moving Forward

Head coach JJ Van Niel made it clear that he isn't dwelling on past disappointments. “I don't reflect back,” he said. “That's negative, but it's just moving forward. Every year is a new shot, but last year was very painful. Mostly, because I didn't think we played our best volleyball.”

With a transformed lineup and numerous fresh faces, Van Niel and his team had to adapt quickly this season. “I really had no idea this year what we were going to look like,” Van Niel acknowledged. Yet, this squad has not only repeated as Big 12 champions and NCAA Tournament hosts, but they've also earned their place in the Sweet 16.

Defensive Dominance

ASU's success was also rooted in their exceptional defense against a tenacious Utah State team that rarely faltered. The Sun Devils capitalized on the Aggies' 21 attack errors, showcasing their ability to exploit opponent weaknesses. As the match progressed, ASU's tactical adjustments became apparent, allowing their key players like Miller, Noemie Glover, and Tatum Parrott to shine.

Miller led the charge with 18 kills on an impressive .471 hitting percentage, while Glover contributed 17 kills at .531. Parrott rounded out the offensive effort with an additional 13 kills.

Notably, ASU continued their serving prowess, concluding the match with a 7-5 advantage in service aces—Miller's three aces contributing significantly to their victory. “They're a great offensive team and their middle (blockers) were very active,” Miller noted, highlighting the challenges posed by Utah State.

The journey doesn't stop here for ASU. They will now travel to Lexington, Kentucky, where they are set to face No. 3 Creighton in the regional hosted by No. 1 seed Kentucky on either December 12 or 13.
