"I grew up with it," Traxx shares, speaking of his early immersion in arts. His mother, Carolyn Nelson-Kavajecz, owns Sterling Silver Studio, an establishment that has nurtured baton twirling for over thirty years. Surrounded by musicians, painters, and dancers, Traxx was steeped in a life that celebrates creativity.

With a family background rich in artistic pursuits, Traxx naturally gravitated towards the performing arts. "Plus, I just have a very artistic family. We are full of musicians and painters and carpenters and hair stylists," he explains. "There are different kinds of events, some of them you pick your music, and some you don't. But for this one, we picked this song because it kind of ties everything together," he says, reflecting on the teamwork behind his creative decisions.

"There's a certain stigma of being a male in a predominantly female sport or art form," he asserts. Yet, inspired by his upbringing and community, Traxx is on a mission to change perceptions. He teaches baton twirling at his mother's studio and aims to provide an example to young boys considering the craft.

"I want people to see that twirling is for everyone," Traxx emphasizes, inviting participation from all genders and ages.

However, he's noticed that many boys drop out as they approach their teenage years. Understanding the hurdles he faced, Traxx hopes to reshape the narrative surrounding the sport. "I teach baton classes to all boys, many girls, and people of all ages. I have kids who are around 2 to I believe my oldest twirler in an adult class is 76," he shares with enthusiasm.

Teaching as Passion

Teaching has not only reignited Traxx's passion but has also allowed him to foster a vibrant community. “I love performing, but I also really truly love sharing my passion for baton twirling and my knowledge with all of my students,” he states.

His excitement is palpable as he anticipates bringing back new ideas and experiences from Paris, stating, "I truly am incredibly grateful for the opportunity, and I really look forward to bringing back my experiences and my knowledge and what I learned with all of my students and the community."
