We have called for years for a two-state solution in the Middle East, but we must recognise that those words are meaningless unless we back them up with action.

For too long, Britain has watched from the sidelines as Palestinian lives were systematically destroyed. The scale of destruction is staggering — over 70,000 people killed, including nearly 20,000 children. Families torn apart, communities displaced, and a population confined to just one-third of their original territory.

Sanctions That Speak Truth

The decision we are announcing today is not made lightly. It is a calculated move that targets only the Israeli government's policies that violate international law and human rights. We will be banning trade with illegal settlements in Palestine, declaring the occupation unlawful under international law, and sanctioning individuals and companies profiting from illegal construction projects like E1.

Why This Matters for Peace

The Israeli government has approved 104 new settlements since December 2022 — more in four years than in the previous 20. The proposed E1 mega settlement would effectively cut through the heart of the West Bank, rendering a two-state solution virtually impossible.

These actions are not only illegal under international law but also directly undermine any possibility of peace and coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. By sanctioning these settlements, we send a clear message: the UK will not stand by while this injustice unfolds.

Separating People from Policies

I want to be absolutely clear — these measures are not aimed at the Israeli people or the Jewish community in Britain. They are specifically targeted at government policies that cause immense suffering. The actions of a few leaders should never define the fate of entire populations.

The Israeli people are not responsible for the actions of their government. And nor is the Jewish community in the UK.

It is deeply concerning when political rhetoric begins to scapegoat entire communities based on the policies of a minority in power. This is not just politically dangerous — it's morally bankrupt and a form of antisemitism that our government will not tolerate.

A Call for Global Solidarity

Britain's new stance reflects our values and our commitment to justice. We must ensure that no one has to live in fear, whether in Gaza or in London's Jewish neighborhoods. Our responsibility is clear: to protect human dignity and uphold international law.

Humanitarian Aid: A Lifeline

In addition to these sanctions, we are also announcing an urgent package of humanitarian aid for Gaza. This isn't just about diplomacy — it's about saving lives. We're working with global partners to get desperately needed supplies to those who need them most.

What Comes Next?

This is not the end of our efforts, but a beginning. Our goal remains unchanged: to support the only viable path forward for both peoples — the two-state solution. The road ahead will be difficult, but I believe that by standing firm in our convictions and working closely with international allies, we can restore hope and stability.
