Jan. 23—EDGELEY, N.D. — Two years ago, Brogan Young was a freshman gripped by pre-game jitters, recalling how he battled nausea leading up to his first basketball start against Kidder County. Today, as a junior for the Edgeley/Kulm-Montpelier Rebels, Young is working tirelessly to become the trusted point guard his team needs.

"Self-confidence will always be the biggest struggle an athlete can have," reflects Young, aware of the mental hurdles that often accompany athletic performance.

A Promising Start

Young's journey in basketball began well before high school. Growing up in Kenmare, he learned the game on a Little Tykes hoop with his older brother, cultivating a passion that ignited during local 3-on-3 tournaments. His dream of playing for E/K-M was fueled by the electric atmosphere of packed gyms during regional games.

His early years in the sport laid groundwork for what would become a breakthrough high school career. In his freshman season, the Rebels made a commendable run to the 2024 Division B Boys Basketball State Tournament, finishing in eighth place. However, the following year saw an early exit at the first round of Region 1. Young's commitment and growth did not go unnoticed, earning him a spot on the 2025 All-District team.

Adapting to Change

Having transitioned through different coaching styles, Young now is under the guidance of Rory Entzi, who previously led the E/K-M girls team. Adjustment was part of the challenge but has proven beneficial.

"He has shown excellent leadership and brings energy to practice," says Coach Entzi, acknowledging Young's evolution into his new role as captain.

Stats That Speak Volumes

As of January 22, Young is averaging 10.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, three assists, and two steals per game, showcasing his all-around contribution.

"My main goal for this season is to build trust," he emphasizes. His recognition of the challenges posed by a new coaching approach reflects a mature mindset—one that seeks to foster unity and collaboration among teammates.

The Road Ahead

Young's optimism is palpable as he discusses the potential of the Rebels. Currently boasting a record of 7-4 overall, 5-2 in Region 1 and 2-0 in District 2, the team appears to be soaring through the season.

"It's still early into the year for us, but we have shown great glimpses of what we could be as a team," Young asserts. His vision extends beyond the season, hoping to establish a resilient foundation for upcoming competitors.
