SOUTH KINGSTOWN — The East Greenwich boys tennis team is on an electrifying journey toward their first state championship title this spring. With a perfect record this season, the Avengers are not just playing matches; they're crafting a narrative of resilience and ambition that resonates with fans across the region.

Three seasons ago, this remarkable team began its climb as freshmen, finishing as runners-up in Division II. That experience proved invaluable. After an undefeated season saw them ascend to Division I, East Greenwich has demonstrated their right to compete among the best, suffering just one loss in this current regular season, setting them up for a shot at glory.

From Runners-Up to Contenders

The Avengers faced Barrington, last year's top seed, with the memory of last year's 4-3 finals loss still fresh in their minds. Yet, following a successful rematch, East Greenwich demonstrated their steady improvement with a decisive 5-2 victory over South Kingstown under the beautiful skies of Broad Rock Middle School on May 12.

“We've definitely come a long way,” said senior Henry Seeley, his eyes gleaming with ambition. “Been in the finals the last three years, and hopefully bringing the Division I championship this year. That would be awesome; it's definitely a goal of mine.”

“More Confidence Than Ever”

This season, the Avengers have showcased remarkable depth at nearly every position. Following a hard-fought rematch against Barrington—where they finally emerged victorious—team members expressed a renewed sense of confidence. Tate Coker-Dodman, the team's No. 1 singles player, remarked:

“I can't wait to hopefully take home the title this year. It's been a great season, and beating Barrington this year has propelled us more than ever.”

East Greenwich isn't just relying on a few star performers; they have depth across their lineup, including talented freshmen Andrew Katz and Floyd Kelly, who have also reached the quarterfinals in the individual tournament alongside the experienced Levy brothers, David and Liam. This combination of youth and experience is what sets East Greenwich apart as they prep for postseason competitions.

A Legacy in the Making

Despite their current success, East Greenwich faces the reality of losing four seniors after this season—a potential hurdle for many teams. However, Coker-Dodman expressed optimism:

“We have three different doubles teams fighting for the same double spot, and all of them are equally as good. Even without our seniors, I believe we'll remain competitive next year.”

This depth has defined their season, leading to seven impressive victories by 6-1 margins. Nevertheless, Barrington stands as the only real threat to their perfect season so far, as evidenced by past finals confrontations.

Preparation and Practice

As the playoffs loom, Coach and players alike acknowledge the work that lies ahead. The Avengers have been practicing daily, promoting intense internal competition that fuels their growth.

“Barrington has definitely been a challenging opponent for us. But our practice has been outstanding,” Seeley notes.

The individual tournaments are set to resume this weekend, as East Greenwich prepares to chase not just trophies but a chapter in their history as a champion team.
