A 16-month-old kangaroo named Chesney made headlines after he vaulted an eight-foot fence and fled from a Wisconsin petting zoo, setting off a dramatic three-day search that had the community on edge. The young marsupial, living at Sunshine Farm in Necedah, Wisconsin, about 160 miles northwest of Milwaukee, was finally coaxed back to safety using his favorite treats and familiar voices.

The escape was not planned; rather, it was a panicked response to a pack of stray dogs that invaded Chesney's enclosure, sending him scaling the fence into the wilderness. Although he remained within a three-mile radius of the farm, his remarkable speed, reaching up to 20 mph, proved a challenging obstacle for searchers.

"I was putting on about 37,000 steps per day looking for him. I haven't done so much exercise in a very long time," said Debbie Marland, Chesney's keeper.

Marland quickly mobilized the community. Friends, neighbors, and volunteers enthusiastically jumped into action, tackling the rugged terrain in search of the desperate kangaroo. Each day, they combed the woods following reported sightings, creating a sense of solidarity among townspeople.

Innovative Search Techniques

As conventional methods were proving insufficient, Marland enlisted the help of Colton Johnson from Midwest Aerial Drone Services. Equipped with heat-sensing technology typically used to find lost pets, Johnson was determined to adapt these techniques for the extraordinary challenge of locating a kangaroo. The mesmerizing drone footage caught Chesney bounding through the forest, prompting comments from Johnson, likening it to a dinosaur running through the woods.

Near-Misses and Heartbreak

The search was fraught with emotional ups and downs. Searchers had close encounters with Chesney on several occasions but were thwarted each time. One particularly tense moment occurred as Chesney leaped into a frigid river, disappearing from the drone's feed entirely.

After a full day without sightings, anxiety levels peaked. Fearing that Chesney had ventured beyond their search perimeter, hopes slipped further when he was spotted resting under a tree but managed to evade capture again.

Reunion: A Heartwarming Conclusion

On Saturday, February 22, 2026, armed with Chesney's favorite treats and a piece of fabric carrying the scent of his companion, Kenny, Marland and her team returned to the last known area. Just as they began to lose hope, Chesney approached them on his own—an image that struck everyone as he walked toward them calmly.

Stacy Brereton, a farm volunteer, recounted the moment: "He had a very calm attitude when he walked up. I just stayed calm with him and just kind of went and sat and let him come to me."

With a gentle touch, Brereton scooped up the 40-pound kangaroo, and the meticulous search concluded at last.

Community Support and Aftermath

The search not only brought Chesney home but solidified community spirit. Marland has plans to enhance the enclosure, installing a mesh cover to prevent any future escapes. Inspired by the story, a local fan is even writing a children's book chronicling Chesney's adventure, hoping to fund future recovery efforts.
