Balogun's story began approximately four years ago when she noticed a lump in her neck shortly after moving from Wasps to the Bristol Bears. The then 24-year-old was gearing up for the pre-season ahead of the 2022-23 campaign when everything changed in an instant. Despite her fierce exterior and passion for rugby, the diagnosis shook her world. “I barely had a chance to process it,” Balogun recalls. “I started treatment just six days later, and that was a whirlwind for me.”

Her perspective on the diagnosis was initially laced with denial. Packing her rugby kit for a week-long hospital stay, she optimistically thought she could continue training amidst treatment. “Looking back, that seems absurd,” she said, reflection and disbelief tinging her voice. “I was wrestling with the reality of cancer yet fixated on rugby.”

Facing the Battle

Balogun underwent three arduous rounds of chemotherapy, facing debilitating side effects that included hair loss and severe fatigue. “The mental and emotional strain was crushing,” she admitted. “It was even harder because I had moved to Bristol without any close friends or family. I often found myself feeling isolated.”

Upon concluding treatment in January 2023, she was joyful yet hesitant about fully returning to her career and personal life. “Rebuilding my identity as an athlete after treatment was a process,” she explained. “You have to mourn who you were before all of this.”

A Return to the Game

In 2023, Balogun not only returned to rugby but also made a remarkable transition, participating with the Barbarians before establishing herself with Bristol's Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR) team. “Rugby became my outlet, my healing platform,” she stated. Earlier this month, Balogun signed a new contract with the Bears, a testament to her resilience and determination to not just survive but thrive.

Additionally, as fate would have it, she was called up to England's Six Nations squad. Circumstances worked in her favor when team member Maddie Feaunati was sidelined, making way for Balogun to step into the matchday 23. “Walking into that arena felt unreal,” she revealed, her eyes sparkling with pride. “It's surreal how life changes in just a few years.”

Yet, amidst the victory, the game was emotionally charged, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of her father's passing. “Running out on the field carrying his memory was a mix of elation and sorrow,” she expressed. “He would always remind me to chase my dreams and I know he would be incredibly proud.”
