The long offseason is finally behind us, and as we approach the Washington Nationals' season opener at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs, excitement is palpable. With only ten days left, the team is stepping up its preparations. Starting pitchers are increasing their innings, and hitters are getting more at-bats. Among them, Cade Cavalli will take the mound for his twelfth big league start.

The lineup is still a work in progress, with some spots secure while others are hotly contested. CJ Abrams is set at shortstop, and Brady House will command the hot corner at third base, but many decisions remain for manager Blake Butera.

Analyzing Positional Battles

As we craft the optimal lineup, a few key positional battles remain unresolved.

One of the significant questions surrounds the catcher position. Keibert Ruiz appears likely to earn the starting job, largely due to his lengthy contract extending until 2030. This arrangement allows the Nationals time to evaluate his potential without rushing his development.

At first base, it seems Luis Garcia Jr. will occupy the position on Opening Day. His versatility opens a spot for Nasim Nunez at second base. Although Abimelec Ortiz was previously hypothesized as a contender, he has struggled this spring with a disappointing .430 OPS across 12 games.

Outfield Conundrum

The outfield situation poses a formidable challenge ahead of the season opener. All four contenders—James Wood, Daylen Lile, Dylan Crews, and Jacob Young—offer unique strengths, but only three can fit in the starting lineup, with the fourth likely taking on designated hitter duties. This leads to the essential question: who will find themselves in the DH role?

Both Wood and Lile struggled defensively last season, each finishing with disappointing -7 and -8 OAA scores, respectively. However, I lean towards giving Wood the DH role for a couple of compelling reasons:

• Lile possesses a strong athletic profile and has shown promise in the past. I believe last year's woes were anomalistic, and he could make a significant defensive comeback.
• Wood's offensive decline correlates more with fatigue and a lack of adjustments last season than his inherent ability. Protecting him in a less physical role might help revive his offensive output.

Daylen Lile leading off capitalizes on one of the top hitters' abilities to get on base. The offense would ideally funnel through him and James Wood, positioning them for optimal run production. However, I acknowledge a possible flaw: four consecutive left-handed bats at the top of the lineup against lefty Matthew Boyd. While not ideal, the fact is, the Nats lack suitable right-handed hitters to occupy those roles at the moment. Timing and matchups will be crucial, though.

Looking Ahead

As we close in on Opening Day, I expect Blake Butera to surprise us with his lineup choices, perhaps revealing defensive alignments we didn't anticipate or daring batting placements. This upcoming season represents a turning point for the Nationals, and I believe we'll see how different this new coaching staff's approach to Nationals baseball will be.
