When you're born into Hollywood royalty — with Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe as your parents — it's easy to assume your path is already mapped out. But Deacon Phillippe, the 24-year-old actor and musician, is determined to write his own story.

"I acknowledge that I'm extremely lucky, but you know, at the same time, I hold myself to a standard," he told me during our Zoom chat from his NYC apartment. "I'm not really looking to prove anything to anyone but myself."

I couldn't help but chuckle at his honesty — it's rare to hear such candid humility from someone with such a prestigious lineage. It's almost like a wink from the universe: this is not going to be another starlet following in her parents' footsteps.

Education First, Entitlement Later

Phillippe didn't rely on his Hollywood gene pool to make it into the industry. He pursued a degree at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and graduated with honors — a choice that many of us might have questioned.

"That was a really big thing, and I think I'm really glad I was pushed to make sure I got that done," he said, his voice tinged with genuine gratitude. "I'm beyond grateful for my education, and I think it's provided so many things."

The value of a good education is often lost in the glittery world of showbiz — especially when parents like Witherspoon and Phillippe are already established stars. But Deacon is one of those rare individuals who sees his privilege as a launching pad, not a crutch.

Music to My Ears

While many aspiring actors focus on drama or film, Deacon took a different route — he's a musician first. He even recorded the end credits song for 'Brother Save Us' with his college friends at NYU's state-of-the-art studios.

"I went to school partly for recorded music at the Clive Davis Institute," he shared. "We ended up recording the end credits song that I wrote with two of my friends from college at school because we had these state-of-the-art studios."

The fact that he could seamlessly blend his artistic passion with his acting debut is not only impressive but also indicative of his well-rounded approach to the entertainment industry.

From TV to Big Screen

Deacon's film journey began on Netflix's 'Never Have I Ever,' where he played a supporting role in two episodes. But now, with 'Brother Save Us,' he steps into the spotlight as a leading man.

The sci-fi thriller, directed by first-time filmmaker Jesse Behrenwald, sees Deacon portraying a farmer trying to protect his family farm and younger brother from a dystopian future dominated by AI. "I just remember feeling surprised that someone could write exactly how I feel about my little brother," he said, referring to Tennessee Toth, the son Witherspoon shares with her ex-husband Jim Toth.

The emotional depth in this script, according to Deacon, is rare — a sentiment that resonated deeply with him. "That depth of love in a script is just something you rarely get to see," he said, adding a touch of awe to his voice.

The Future: Rom-Coms and Remakes

With his mother's romantic comedy legacy in mind, Deacon is now working on a role in 'Better Than the Movies,' a Netflix adaptation of Lynn Painter's novel. "It's a rom-com that pays homage to many rom-coms, and I really appreciate the era of '90s rom-coms," he shared with excitement.

His admiration for his mother's filmography is evident — especially when asked about her most iconic role. "I would say, 'Sweet Home Alabama,'" he replied, with a slight chuckle. But then, he paused, adding, "It's very weird to watch your parents act. It's hard."

As he grew older, Deacon's perspective on his parents' careers has evolved — and so has his appreciation for their work. "That's why I'm always leaning on them for advice, which is another thing I'm blessed to have," he added.

The Dream Project

Currently, Deacon is working on a script with his best friend. The project involves music and draws from their shared experiences. "It involves music. It involves true stories from our lives," he teased. "I think that would be the next thing I'd love to do — or a 'Real Steel' remake."

"I love 'Real Steel,'" he said, recalling his favorite film about robot boxing and Hugh Jackman's character. "I think bringing the nostalgia back from that IP would be really fun."

With a name like Deacon Phillippe, it's clear he's not just another Hollywood heir. He's an artist in the making — one who's not afraid to take his own path, even if it means stepping out of his parents' shadows.
