Join Me on a Life-Changing Reporting Journey
If you're a university student with a passion for journalism, this is your chance! I am officially opening applications for my 2026 win-a-trip contest, a program I've been running since 2006. Every year, I take one student along with me on a reporting trip to cover important global issues.
Why Participate?
This contest is more than just a trip; it's about empowering the next generation of journalists to shine a light on underserved topics and gain practical experience in the field. My aim is to inspire students to write about neglected issues and bring their unique perspectives to the forefront.
“Every emerging voice can add value and insight to the narratives that shape our world.”
In 2007, we documented the devastation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which later became the basis for an HBO documentary titled “Reporter.” The stories we uncovered opened eyes and ignited discussions across the globe.
The Contest Details
The contest is officially open now and will accept applications until 11:59 p.m. E.T. on January 31, 2026. Applicants must submit an essay of up to 700 words detailing why they should be selected, what they can contribute to the reporting experience, and their aspirations in journalism.
But be aware—this trip is not for the faint-hearted. It will involve challenging travel conditions:
- bouncing over rough roads
- experiencing local cuisine that might not sit well
- spending nights in basic accommodations
As the saying goes at The New York Times, 'first prize is a trip with me; second prize is two trips with me.'
Who Can Apply?
The contest is open to students enrolled in any accredited American two- or four-year college or university, both undergraduates and graduate students. My goal is to attract a diverse pool of applicants. We need voices from all backgrounds, including writers of color, women, LGBTQ+ students, conservatives, liberals, and everyone in between. Your identity and experiences are invaluable to the stories we aim to tell.
Along with your essay, feel free to include links to any writing, photography, or video content you've created. These will help convey your skills and passion to the selection committee.
What Past Winners Have Achieved
The impact of this contest extends beyond the trip. Many past winners have gone on to have illustrious careers in journalism:
- Tyler Pager's blog from the Central African Republic
- Aneri Pattani's experience in Liberia
- Austin Meyer's investigation in India
Each of these stories not only showcased the realities these winners faced but also contributed significantly to public discourse.
Your Journey Beyond This Contest
If you don't win this contest, I encourage you to create your own opportunities. Traveling doesn't have to be costly; some regions offer volunteer opportunities or teach abroad programs to offset expenses. You can still expand your horizons and gather experiences that will shape your understanding of the world.
Final Thoughts
My guiding principle has always been that journalism can change lives. I want to hear from you—your stories, your insights, and your vision for the future. Let's empower each other to expose the truths that often go unnoticed.
Good luck to all applicants! I look forward to meeting the next emerging voice in journalism who will accompany me in 2026.
