On a wintery evening under the twinkling Christmas lights at the SkyBridge at Boyne Mountain, Trevor Van Camp knelt down to propose to his long-time girlfriend, Danielle Jenkins. But in a moment of nervous excitement, he accidentally dropped the engagement ring, sending it plummeting through the grate of the 118-foot bridge and into the snow below.

"When I went to go get the ring out of the box, mind you, I'm shaken up, I look down, like not a good idea, and yeah, I dropped the ring," said Van Camp, who faced the immediate panic that follows such a blunder.

A Determined Search

Despite the shock, the couple's resolve to find the ring remained steadfast. They received permission from the resort to make their way down the snowy slope in search of the lost treasure.

For over two hours, equipped with metal detectors and aided by the resort's night shift snowmaking supervisor, Pat Harper, they scoured the area. The freezing cold and encroaching night only added to the challenge of their search.

“I give big props and kudos to Pat for doing that for us, because he saved the day, he really did,” Jenkins expressed later, highlighting the heroic efforts of Harper.

Just as the couple began to lose hope around 10 p.m., Harper's metal detector emitted its distinct ping. With hands trembling from both the cold and the excitement of the moment, Harper sifted through the snow until he saw it—the edge of the ring poking through. "I kind of sat there for a minute and I was like, 'There's no way you just found that,'" Harper recalled, disbelief and joy blending in his voice.

With the ring safely back in Jenkins' hands, the couple's ordeal transformed from a stressful incident into a beloved story they would cherish forever. Jenkins said, "It was an experience that we now have, a story to tell of our engagement."
