Last Friday, May 29, high school sports kicked into high gear in the Appleton area, with track and field athletes, baseball teams, and lacrosse players making headlines. The competition was fierce, and the enthusiasm palpable as schools vied for glory.

TRACK AND FIELD

Division 1

West De Pere Sectional

At the West De Pere Sectional, the Appleton North Lightning emerged victorious, largely thanks to Eva Busch's remarkable performance. Busch racked up double wins in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter events, clocking in at 4:57.91 and 10:47.8, respectively. This achievement propelled her team to a strong total of 113 points.

Ashley Parrish also shined, clinching first place in the 100 meters with a time of 12.40 seconds and winning the long jump at 19-0. West De Pere's Kaylin Thomson was another notable performer, sweeping the hurdles with impressive times of 14.64 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and 44.80 seconds in the 300 hurdles.

Other standout names included Mya Wysocki, London LaBlonde, Trista Harju, and Hailey Schroeder from Bay Port, who won both the 400 and 800 relays with times of 48.64 seconds and 1:42.61, respectively. Ashwaubenon's Lera Black took home gold in the pole vault, clearing 12-6 and also winning the triple jump with a distance of 36-7.5.

Beaver Dam Sectional

Meanwhile, the Neenah girls soared to a commanding victory with 120 points, defeating contenders Slinger and Germantown, who both tied for second with 96 points. Key athletes Emma Severson and Celia Gentile delivered standout performances, with Severson winning the shot put (48-9) and discus (153-9), while Gentile claimed victories in both long jump (19-2) and triple jump (39-1).

BASEBALL

Seymour vs. De Pere

In nonconference action, Seymour took down De Pere 9-5. The Thunder put together a remarkable third inning, scoring five runs to turn a narrow lead into a formidable advantage. Players like Carson Staffeldt and Brayden Banker turned heads with their dual-hit contributions.

Will Nikolay and Colton Setzer made significant impacts for De Pere, each notching two hits apiece and proving that the team fought valiantly despite the loss. The back-and-forth nature of the game hints at the growing excitement as the season continues.

Manitowoc Lincoln vs. Kaukauna

Turner Sorenson shined with three hits and four RBIs, alongside Nick Minikel's commendable two hits and three RBIs.

LACROSSE

Appleton United vs. Kimberly

In boys' lacrosse, Appleton United secured a regional finals spot by prevailing over Kimberly 5-3. This match illustrates the rising competitiveness of lacrosse in the area, with Appleton drawing closer to championship aspirations. They will face the top-seeded Waunakee next, which promises to be an electrifying matchup.

Neenah vs. De Pere/West De Pere
