The basketball and hockey seasons have wrapped up, leaving us in the calm before the storm of Gopher football. As we eagerly anticipate the fall, I intend to dissect the potential offensive depth chart for the 2026 season. With much speculation, it's clear that the roster is returning significant talent, and the buzz is palpable.

This year, the Gophers ranked 7th nationally in returning production, and this is a strong indicator of the promise that lies ahead. If the team can harness this experience and add strategic transfers, we could see a marked improvement after a promising, yet inconsistent 2025 season.

Offensive Overview

Last year's offensive stats left a bit to be desired, ranking 94th in SP+ and 12th in the Big Ten. With returning starters, the spotlight is on them to enhance their performance. Let's break down the key positions.

Quarterback

Starter: Drake Lindsey

Depth: Max Shikenjanski, Michael Merdinger (Liberty transfer), Dylan Wittke
Freshmen: Owen Lansu, Brady Palmer

Drake Lindsey is set to lead the charge; barring injury, he will be at the helm of the Gopher offense. However, the back-up situation is less clear, and it might just be where the pressure lies. Shikenjanski and Wittke have shared responsibilities in past games, but it remains to be seen who will rise if needed. Merdinger, a hopeful primary backup, could also play a pivotal role.

Although true freshmen Lansu and Palmer aren't expected to have an immediate impact, keep an eye on Lansu—he dazzled in the spring game, connecting on 5 out of 7 passes for 110 yards. However, Palmer struggled, throwing three interceptions which serve as a reminder that it's too early to judge their futures based on a spring game alone.

Running Back

Starter: Darius Taylor
Depth: AJ Turner, TJ Thomas (Elon transfer), Xavier Ford, Grant Washington, Jaron Thomas (Purdue transfer)
Freshmen: Zeke Bates, Ryan Estrada, Niko Castillo

Darius Taylor is back and determined after a disappointing last season. Having rushed for 670 yards and four touchdowns, he's got everything to prove and can potentially ascend the ranks to become one of the Gophers' leading rushers. Taylor's bounce-back potential hinges on returning to form, with AJ Turner looking to contribute after missing the previous season due to injury.
