The Grand Canyon Lopes softball team has etched their name in history by clinching the 2026 Mountain West regular-season title. This milestone is especially significant as it marks the first Mountain West title for any Lopes team, a tremendous feat for a program that continues to rise.

An Impressive Season

It's hard to overstate just how dominant the Lopes have been this season. Under the guidance of Head Coach Shanon Hays, the team has not only showcased their resilience but also displayed incredible skill on the diamond. Entering 2026, they were coming off four consecutive seasons with 39 or more wins and four NCAA Tournament berths, setting a high bar for themselves as they moved to the Mountain West Conference.

Many pundits expected a challenging ride, given the heightened competition from formidable teams like Nevada, San Diego State, and Fresno State. But the Lopes turned those expectations on their head, achieving a remarkable 30-0 start, remaining the last undefeated team in the country until a controversial officiating decision in a game against Oklahoma State.

With a 2.17 team ERA—the best in the Mountain West—they have consistently silenced opposing batters, leading the league in strikeouts (311) and boasting the best walk rate in the country at just 5.4%. They also hold a robust .320 batting average, tied for the conference lead in OPS (.975), illustrating their offensive prowess.
