Recent statistics from St Petrocs, a leading charity in Cornwall, show that a staggering 153 individuals sought help for rough sleeping just in October—the highest number the charity has ever recorded for that month. This represents a harrowing 35% increase from the same period last year.

"The figures are really staggering," says Lois Wild, director of engagement at St Petrocs. "We are seeing such high numbers of people sleeping rough at the moment."

Understanding the Causes

The dramatic surge can largely be attributed to the ongoing cost of living crisis, which continues to push many individuals and families to the brink. The charity reported that in September, they assisted 176 individuals, marking the highest single-month figure ever recorded. Wild stated that the severe shortage of affordable housing and limited private rental properties are compounding factors driving individuals into homelessness.

The emotional and psychological toll of homelessness cannot be understated. Individuals facing this dire situation often experience a profound sense of dislocation and despair, as illustrated by the story of Mike, a 33-year-old who ended up on the streets after a personal crisis.

"It's demoralising, it turns your world upside down," Mike recounts. "One week you are thinking happy days and planning work, and then the next week you are thinking: 'Where's the doorway, where is there no rain?'"

The Human Impact

As the weather grows colder, the need for immediate action to support the homeless becomes critical. St Petrocs has already launched its winter campaign in response to plummeting temperatures, a timely decision considering the fact that many individuals will face life-threatening situations if left unsheltered.

For many women, the dangers of street homelessness are compounded. One unidentified woman utilizing St Petrocs' services expressed her fears succinctly: "It's scary. You have to stay awake; you could get murdered or raped." The heightened danger for women in this vulnerable situation underscores the urgent need for tailored support systems and safe spaces.

What is Being Done?

St Petrocs operates two community-based resource centers in Truro and Penzance, offering crucial services such as housing advice, access to healthcare, and basic sanitation facilities. These centers provide a lifeline for individuals, offering food, drinks, bedding, and a supportive environment with volunteer-led activities.
