Honoring Animation's Giants: Cartoon Forum's Tribute Nominees Shine a Light on European Creativity

Setting the Stage for Recognition

On the heels of its 1053rd animation series financing deal totaling over $4.43 billion, Cartoon Forum returns to Toulouse from September 14-17 with a renewed commitment to celebrating the artistry and dedication of Europe's animation community. With only 12 days before the grand opening, the event has unveiled its 2026 Tribute nominees — an annual tradition that began in 2006 and has become a beacon for excellence within the European animation sector.

The Heart of European Animation

This year's nominees span three established categories: Broadcaster, Investor/Distributor, and Producer of the Year. Each selection tells a story of how individuals and organizations have driven the sector forward through bold vision and creative execution.

Producer of the Year Nominees

The Producer of the Year category showcases a diverse group of studios from across Europe. Bionaut, based in the Czech Republic, has been a consistent force in animation since 2015, having produced series like "9 Million Colors," "Hungry Bear Tales," and "Animalies." Their return as co-producers for "Scope of the Universe," a Norwegian project by Løv Film, shows their continued influence.

French boutique studio Bobby Prod, known for Cannes hit "Jim Queen," also presented "The Broos" at Cartoon Forum 2024. The TikTok-instagram-originated series was later adapted into an animated format through co-production with Arte France, demonstrating how digital storytelling can reach global audiences.

Mago Production, a Barcelona-based studio, brings extensive experience in both 2D and 3D animation, having previously pitched projects like "Polinopolis" and "Limbo Ville." This year, they're presenting "Lily & Kyle," another testament to their storytelling strength.

Lastly, Melusine Studio from Luxembourg returns with two co-productions: "Mebh and the Wolf Pups" and "The Otherness," highlighting their commitment to bringing fresh narratives to international screens.

Investor/Distributor Nominees

In the Investor/Distributor category, three companies stand out for their global reach and commitment to quality animation:

• Folivari International, France — responsible for "Samuel" and "Pil's Adventures," brings a distinctive voice to European children's programming.
• Mediawan Kids & Family, France — producers of "Ki & Hi" and "Witch Detectives," continue to expand the boundaries of animated storytelling.
• Studio 100 International, Germany — creators of "Maya and the Bee" and "Louca," have become synonymous with engaging, high-quality content for younger viewers.

Broadcaster Category

The Broadcaster category includes three public-service broadcasters that exemplify how animation can be used to enrich culture and education:

• BBC — known for "Dungeon & Kittens" and "Duck & Frog," demonstrates a strong commitment to family-friendly programming.
• SVT (Sveriges Television), Sweden — featuring "Team Nuggets" and "Tree & Bee," continues to promote Nordic creativity on the global stage.
• Südwestrundfunk — creators of "Sir Mouse" and "The Jungle Bunch," bring their own unique storytelling flair to the table.

A New Chapter: The Ecoprod-Cartoon Tribute

This year, Cartoon Forum introduces a fourth award category: the Ecoprod-Cartoon Tribute, honoring companies that have made significant contributions to sustainability within the animation industry. This initiative, launched in partnership with Ecoprod — a French non-profit organization focused on supporting environmental transition in audiovisual industries — underscores a growing awareness of ecological responsibility.

The nominees for this award include:

• Gao Shan Pictures, France — creators of "The Smurfs" and "In Waves," recognized for their eco-conscious approach to production.
• La Cabane Productions, France — known for "Wolf's Dinner" and "Luce and the Rock," are pioneers in green filmmaking practices.
• Cartoon Saloon, Ireland — creators of "Wolfwalkers" and "Natu Natu," have consistently championed environmental narratives through animation.
