Keoghan's commitment was so intense that he gave up his entire Christmas break in 2025 — between shooting The Beatles biopics — to be on set for six straight days. That dedication, however, came with a small but memorable challenge: hair.

Coming directly from the set of a major Hollywood production, Keoghan was sporting a thick Fab Four mop-top that had his director concerned about the film's authenticity. "I could live with the longer hair, but my big concern was that he'd have sideburns and a handlebar moustache, and you can't imagine a key worker rocking up like that!" Bartley laughed.

The hair situation became a humorous yet poignant detail of the production, as Keoghan's appearance brought unexpected charm to his role. The film was infused with magical realism — including the symbolic use of foxes — which mirrored Keoghan's own belief that his late mother would return as one. This personal connection made for a touching moment on set when a fox actually appeared during filming.

Originally, a line in the script referenced famous people who had been fostered, listing Barry Keoghan and John Lennon as examples. Bartley hadn't remembered that line when she sent it to him, so he found it amusingly ironic when he read it.

"So obviously when Barry first read it, he got a great laugh out of that — but it was embarrassing as it looked like I was trying to convince him to join the film!"

The final script replaced the names with Lennon and a generic reference, creating an unintentional meta-narrative. Now, viewers might wonder whether Keoghan's presence in the film was just a coincidence or a poetic echo of his own journey — especially given the hair.

Keoghan told Variety via Bartley that working on 'Lemonade' gave him a "beautiful sense of closure and understanding of the care system a little more." The parallels between his life and the story were striking, especially in how he looked out for his younger brother and his relationship with a social worker who tried to keep them together. "A lot of stuff started coming back to him while we were shooting," Bartley recalled. "It was a lovely experience and just kind of felt like it was meant to be."

There's even a delightful coincidence in how the lead actor, Lewis Brophy, came to join the film. Both Keoghan and Brophy are from the same Dublin neighborhood, and both were amateur boxers who admired the star growing up. Brophy had even messaged Keoghan on Instagram years ago, expressing his admiration and dream of following in his footsteps.

"So when we first auditioned [Brophy], we didn't mention that Barry was involved, and when he found out it was unbelievable, a full circle moment for him," Bartley said.
