2025 marked a catastrophic milestone: according to Reporters Without Borders, it was the deadliest year on record for journalists, where hate and impunity predominated.

This statement is not mere rhetoric; it underscores a chilling reality that prevails in regions run by oppressive regimes or militant groups. In Ukraine, Russian forces have relentlessly targeted reporters, while in Mexico, criminal outfits hunt journalists like prey. It begs the question: where is the accountability?

Disinformation: The New Norm

As I recently discussed at the Munich Security Conference with fellow journalist Alina Kharysava, the vacuum of disinformation is thriving. Alternative truths thrive in these conflicts, especially as access for independent reporters is increasingly curtailed. The manipulation of narratives has become commonplace.

At The Reckoning Project, our mission is to combat this insidious trend by empowering local journalists, providing them with the skills needed to collect testimonies that withstand scrutiny and serve as beacons of truth amidst a fog of propaganda. We seek to destroy fabricated narratives that aim to suppress the hard truths of atrocities committed by regimes and armed factions alike.

The Cost of Silence

When journalists like Colvin are silenced, entire populations are left without a voice. The absence of independent witnesses transforms public perception into a polarized battleground, where opinions are formed based on tribal allegiance rather than truthful facts.

The historical impact of journalism cannot be overstated. Past reporting has influenced tangible policy changes—like the NATO intervention during the Kosovo crisis—but as access dwindles, we become vulnerable to narratives authored by bloggers and social influencers, often driven by misinformation.
