Jaguars' Eric Murray Returns: A Boost for the Defense

This week, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced the opening of a 21-day practice window for safety Eric Murray, signaling his promising return from a neck injury that has sidelined him since Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams. Murray's return is a pivotal moment for the Jaguars' defense as they gear up for the remaining games of the season.

Murray was placed on the injured reserve list after sustaining a neck injury during the team's London game, requiring him to miss four games per league rules. The safety had signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract with $12 million guaranteed earlier this offseason—his addition marked a key decision by general manager James Gladstone. Before his injury, he showcased his skills with four pass breakups, one interception, 34 total tackles, and a quarterback hit across seven games.

“Great to just get him back out on the grass. Hopefully, the communication can continue to calm things down with his presence,” said Jaguars head coach Liam Coen.

With Murray's absence, the Jaguars relied on both third-year safety Antonio Johnson and rookie Rayuan Lane to fill the gap on the field. According to Coen, both players have stepped up significantly during this challenging time. “I really believe that Antonio Johnson has stepped up in a major way. The last few weeks, specifically, Dewey [Andrew Wingard] has also played some good football for us,” added Coen.

Although the return of Murray is much anticipated, it's unclear whether he will be activated as soon as next week. The Jaguars also made waves in their roster movements by signing veteran safety Juan Thornhill and rookie safety Trevian Thomas to the practice squad recently, reinforcing depth as they navigate the latter part of the season.

Recognition for Travis Etienne

Murray wasn't the only Jacksonville player receiving accolades this week. Running back Travis Etienne has been nominated for the 2025 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, an honor that recognizes players who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship. This award was created in 2014 to pay tribute to the late Art Rooney Sr., the founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Sportsmanship is at the very core of the game, the foundation of our values that are shared across all levels of the sport,” stated Troy Vincent, NFL executive vice president of football operations. “These Rooney Sportsmanship Award nominees demonstrate to the world how the game is played with respect and integrity at the highest level of competition.”

This year, Etienne has stepped up as one of the Jaguars' most consistent players, totaling 815 rushing yards and five touchdowns, while averaging 74.1 rushing yards per game. He's also contributed significantly in the passing game, catching 24 passes for two receiving touchdowns.

As the Jaguars continue to make strategic moves, both on and off the field, the anticipation grows. With Eric Murray's imminent return, the Jaguars are poised for a late-season push, and it will be crucial to see how they integrate both Murray and their newfound talent from recent roster adjustments.
