Feb. 4—JAMESTOWN — The air is buzzing with anticipation as the Annual St. John's Academy Archery Tournament approaches. Over the past four years, I've witnessed Chris Althoff's excitement grow, and this year proves to be the most remarkable yet. "We're thrilled to welcome the largest number of participants we've ever seen," Althoff exclaimed.

A Record-Making Participation

This weekend, spanning from February 5-7, St. John's will open its doors to young archers from 25 schools across the state. With preregistrations exceeding 550, Althoff and his team have even added rounds to ensure every eager participant gets to compete.

"This will be the most kids we've ever had for a tournament," said Althoff.

Among the attendees, powerhouse schools like New Rockford will field over 80 archers, while Carrington isn't far behind with 65 competitors. New Rockford and Carrington are returning for their second year, showcasing their growing commitment to the sport. Meanwhile, LaMoure/Litchville-Marion, although smaller in numbers, marks its entry into the competitive archery scene this year.

The Best of North Dakota Takes Aim

The participation mini-explosion has drawn teams from across North Dakota, reaching as far west as Richardton-Taylor and as far north as Rolla. Archers from Casselton are packing their gear to travel west, while students from Ellendale head up from the southern regions. This diverse participation creates a rich atmosphere and ensures that the competitive spirit runs high.

Understanding the Events

The tournament consists of two thrilling events. First up is the bullseye competition, where archers shoot three arrows from both 10 and 15 meters. The second event, the 3D range competition, will feature various 3D animal targets. "When we started, the goal was just to give the kids an opportunity to shoot a home tournament instead of having to travel for all their tournaments," Althoff reflected.

Interestingly, St. John's Academy will have 40 of its own students participating, while the newly formed Jamestown High School team plans to showcase its full 17-member roster. Jennifer Lipetzsky, head coach of Jamestown High, expressed her gratitude, highlighting the necessity of the program:

The Journey to the Tournament

This year has been monumental for the Jamestown High School team. Founded during the summer, they've started gaining momentum quickly. Many archers have already set personal bests, showcasing the program's strong potential.

"We began practicing in October and are already seeing our students excel in competitions," Lipetzsky noted proudly. The team has undertaken an ambitious schedule, competing regularly and preparing for a state tournament in Minot come March, followed by the nationals in Utah in April.
