December 5—JAMESTOWN — The air is thick with excitement at the University of Jamestown as we gear up for the first official NCAA Division 2 basketball season. Head coach Casey Bruggeman is optimistic yet realistic, acknowledging both the potential challenges and the high expectations surrounding the team.

"There's a lot of unknown of what our record will actually look like," Bruggeman stated. "Our guys expect to do well this year but also have the humility to know that there are a lot of other good teams who expect that too." It's this blend of ambition and humility that has become the cornerstone of the Jimmies' revitalized team culture.

A Historic Transition

Entering Division 2 marks a significant turning point for the Jimmies after a competitive final season at the NAIA level, where they posted a commendable 17-11 record, finishing second in the North Star Conference. Their journey culminated in a heartbreaking loss in the conference tournament, but that experience has only fueled their resolve moving forward.

"We had a really good year," Bruggeman reflected. "We went 1-3 against Division 2 teams last year. That was fun to kind of get a taste of that NSIC basketball, and it made everyone excited for our full D2 schedule this year."

The Rebuild: New Talent and Strategy

As Bruggeman strides into the season with a new roster—including 11 fresh recruits—the question surrounding the starting lineup remains unanswered. The pressure of rebuilding while integrating new talent is palpable, yet also exhilarating. Of the recruits, seven hail from high schools, two from junior colleges, and two as transfers from other Division 2 programs, each bringing a unique set of skills to the table.

"I don't think the recruiting ever really stops," Bruggeman noted. He emphasized the importance of developing the returning players—fostering a cohesive team spirit that is essential in a competitive landscape.

Key Players to Watch

The attention naturally shifts to the returning Jimmie stars, particularly Cole Glasgow, Anthony Walters, and Owen Hektner. Glasgow, a redshirt junior and Division 1 transfer from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, has emerged as a vital part of the team. His performance during critical moments last season speaks volumes about his potential this year:

"He connects with a lot of other players when he is on the floor, he brings high-motor energy, and is a great defender," Bruggeman praised. "He had 21 points and 11 assists in our last two playoff games. It's been fun to see him take another jump this offseason."

Walters and Hektner are pivotal as well, known for their three-point shooting prowess and ability to deliver under pressure. Walters brings a physical presence on the court while shooting nearly 40% from beyond the arc, and Hektner, a 6-foot-8 stretch forward, is transitioning from a specialist to a more versatile player.

Preparing for Challenge

As practices ramped up in October, a notable exhibition game against the University of North Dakota allowed the team to test its mettle:

"I thought it was really productive," Bruggeman commented on their performance. "We dressed 18 and played all 18, held the lead for 11 minutes in the first half. I was proud of our guys, whether they played four minutes or 14, they all competed."

Looking Ahead

The Jimmies' conference schedule began on November 25 at Northern State University, with the first home game kicking off on December 6 against the University of Mary. Coach Bruggeman is keen to foster community support around the program:

"This is a group that is worth supporting. They are good young men, they go to class, get good grades, and are good teammates. We hope everyone can get on board with us and pack Harold Newman Arena."
