Exploring the Life of an Icon
Lauren Hutton, once told she wasn't cut out for modeling in the 1960s, defied the odds to become a name synonymous with beauty and resilience. In a world increasingly obsessed with perfection, Hutton's identity as a 'believable beauty' resonated with both consumers and the industry alike.
At 82, she dazzles with the same charisma that made her the highest-paid model in history, holding the record for the most cover appearances on American Vogue at 26. When I spoke with her, it was her vivacious spirit that shone through—no regrets, just stories of a life well-lived.
Beauty Redefined
Born Mary Laurence Hutton during World War II in Charleston, South Carolina, she faced numerous challenges, including familial upheaval and societal expectations. Yet, her tenacity led her through a succession of modeling rejections to ultimately become the face of Revlon in 1973, signing a staggering quarter-million-dollar contract—the largest of its time.
Her physical traits, particularly that iconic gap-toothed smile, were often criticized, but she transformed perceived imperfections into her greatest assets. "I was discouraged from showing my gap at first, but eventually it became my signature," she reflected. Who among us wouldn't want to own our unique stories, just as Hutton has?
Adventures Beyond the Runway
Modeling was just one chapter in Hutton's life. With an adventurous spirit, she claimed, "My life was traveling, I didn't come to New York to see myself on magazine stands." Indeed, her travels took her to Africa, where she lived among pygmies and experienced cultures that would most certainly be considered exotic in her modeling days.
"You're constantly excited. You're constantly thrilled. And everything's beautiful."
When I asked about her motivations, she was quick to remind me it was about adventure first. Her reputation was built on authenticity, making her more relatable to the women who admired her.
Resilience and Rediscovery
Life isn't all runway glam; Hutton's journey took poignant turns, including a motorcycle accident in 2000 that nearly took her life. Her recounting of the event is both vivid and humorous: "Oh, I was dead, and I wasn't breathing at all. Those boys saved me. My wingmen!" In every twist and turn, Hutton has proven that she has the resilience of a supermodel—not just in appearance but in spirit.
Despite life's challenges, Hutton's adventurous nature and willingness to embrace change have led her to continually redefine what it means to be a model and a woman in today's culture.
Legacy and Influence
What remains striking about Hutton is her unwavering belief in herself and her ideal of beauty that transcends the superficial. It's not unheard of for models to fade into obscurity; however, Hutton's charm and wit have kept her in the public eye, both as a model and an actress, featured in films like American Gigolo.
The Future of Beauty
As we discuss her legacy, Hutton hopes that her journey can inspire the next generation of models and women: "You do not need to conform to the industry's standards to be successful. Navigate your own way. Believe in your story."
Lauren Hutton remains a testament to resilience, individuality, and adventure in an ever-evolving industry. With countless stories and endless charm, she continues to captivate the world. As she phrases it, she's had "a great life, I've been very lucky."
