Alistair Carmichael, MP and chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, stated, "This is a company that as far as I can see hasn't started yet the necessary process of turning things around." His remarks stem from a highly critical select committee report released on 1 May, which accused South East Water of inadequate governance and a prevailing culture of unaccountability.

The report revealed that much of Tunbridge Wells and some adjacent neighborhoods faced periods of low pressure or complete water loss between November 29 and December 4. This was attributed to a disinfection issue at Pembury Water Treatment Works.

In the following days, customers were advised to boil their water before consumption, further straining public confidence.
