“I think I was more nervous Thursday, just like seeing where I was going to come in at. I don't have expectations. I'm a freshman, I'm coming in just seeing what I can do. I know that, like everybody's going to love and support me anyways, so just trying my best, seeing what I can do for myself.”

“You know I was hoping for a first place finish today but I ran a 56 and bouncing back from an injury. So I'm just happy that I remained consistent with my past years. I have learned to take it all in, enjoy every minute. Allow yourself to feel the stress. Feel the pain, feel the love. Everything happens for a reason. God has a purpose. God has a plan.”

“Oh, it was so exciting. Just like how having a little bit of a rough start to the season, it just felt really cool. Just ending the season really great and I was super excited about that. It was a great group of girls competing with me and I just had so much fun doing it with my friends too.”

“Yeah, I was really excited to be one of the top two because this is like my first season pole vaulting, so it was really fun. Wow, that's so cool. That's so far. I'm just like, really excited and happy right now.”

Then, there was Claudia Ifft, a senior from Bloomington High, who left with gold—a medal that symbolizes much more than victory. With three siblings who have also clinched state championships, Claudia has known the bar was set high. Yet, she embraced the challenge with a smile.

“So actually, my three of my siblings have been state champions. Competitions after competitions. I'd have jump-offs with Liliana just in practice alone. She'd beat me, of course, because she's older, but I'm tied up with her now, so that's good for me!”
