Liam Frey: A Remarkable All-State Achievement in Jamestown

Embracing the All-State Honor

On November 26, Jamestown High School's Liam Frey received thrilling news that would etch his name in the annals of high school football. The senior running back learned he had been named to the 2025 NDHSCA All-State Division AA Football Team, a dream that began for him much earlier in his career.

"Coach Nelson told me just a day or two ahead of when they named everyone. It was a pretty special moment, and I was really excited about it. I always wanted to be a part of it," Frey reflected.

This accolade is monumental, especially since Frey is the only player from Jamestown to make the All-State team this year, being named to the second team roster.

The Journey to All-State

Frey's determination has been evident since he stepped onto the varsity field. After three seasons with mixed outcomes, he set a tangible goal at the end of last year. The notion that he could join the ranks of extraordinary athletes was fuel for his relentless pursuit.

“I was thinking during our banquet last year about wanting to be a part of that group of players. It's a significant honor to be recognized among that limited number of players from all around the state,” Frey said.

Despite the Odds

This season, the Jamestown Blue Jays faced a challenging 1-8 record as a team. However, statistically, Frey's performance shone brightly. He showcased his abilities from the onset, racking up 132 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the opening game against Wahpeton—a matchup that he fondly remembers.

“A special moment for me this year was playing against Wahpeton in that first game. It was the most fun I had all year, being able to play with everyone on the field. That game will always be special to me,” Frey recounted.

Recognizing Achievement

Throughout the season, Frey averaged over 112 yards rushing per game and accounted for 12 of the Blue Jays' 13 rushing touchdowns. Defensively, he wasn't just an offensive star; he tallied 34 total tackles, 23 solo tackles, and two sacks. His tenacity and skill reached a pinnacle when he surpassed the landmark of 1,000 rushing yards, becoming the first Blue Jay running back to accomplish this feat in over 35 years.

“For me, my biggest accomplishment was hitting 1,000 yards. Walking into my senior year, I didn't think I would be able to achieve it, so it's a pretty special memory for me,” said Frey, who finished the season with 1,012 rushing yards.

Gratitude and Recognition

Frey is quick to acknowledge the team effort behind his success, providing heartfelt thanks to his coach. His relationship with Coach Bill Nelson exemplifies the mentorship and support inherent in the sports community.

“There are not enough words to express my gratitude to Coach Nelson. His relentless dedication and the demand for excellence motivated me to achieve not just in football but in life,” Frey stated. “I owe everything to him for working with me for over four years.”
