Local Swimmers Shine at CIF-SS Championships

The CIF-Southern Section Swimming Championships held at Mt. San Antonio College was a remarkable showcase of talent as local swimmers dominated the pool, captivating fans and coaches alike. With six individual titles and a relay championship up for grabs, the excitement was palpable.

Pablo Ingrum, a junior at Oak Park, exemplified the spirit and camaraderie of his team, despite the individual nature of the sport. He stated, “Even though swimming is an individual sport, the team aspect definitively comes through. It helps knowing it's not just you out there. You've got people on the sidelines who believe in you.”

Ingrum clinched the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.55 and contributed to a championship relay team.

The Championship Prowess of Local Athletes

The three-day event spanning May 7-9 featured a mix of fierce competition and personal bests. Notably, local high school athletes not only brought home titles but also set new records, showcasing a blend of hard work, talent, and determination.

• Megan Wang of Newbury Park defended her Division 2 title in the girls 100-yard backstroke, clocking an impressive 52.86 seconds, which was a personal best and a school record.
• Agoura's Sofija Gelev mirrored Wang's success by defending her Division 3 crowns in both the girls 50 freestyle (23.62) and 100 free (51.08), setting school records in the process.

Each swimmer's performance was punctuated by their unwavering determination to succeed, as highlighted by Elliott Drottar, Ingrum's teammate and fellow swimmer at Oak Park. Drottar celebrated his Division 3 boys 100 free title, finishing with a record time of 45.86, emphasizing strategic strength and speed: “Started out fast and came back faster.”
