It's about how sport helps young people learn from being together.” This philosophy echoes throughout the initiative known as the Tour of Sports Values, a project spearheaded by the Catholic Archdiocese of Milan.

What is the Tour of Sports Values?

The Tour of Sports Values is a visionary program set to involve around 13,000 youths from various schools and community centers across Milan's archdiocese by February 20. Intended to run concurrently with the Winter Olympics, it promotes ideals of excellence, friendship, and respect through a series of interactive workshops, exhibitions, and athlete testimonials. Archbishop Mario Delpini has been actively engaged in the preparatory letters associated with the initiative, emphasizing the moral values intertwined with both faith and sports.

“The values of sport are not solely limited to competition; they are also about cooperation and solidarity,” says Matilde Napoli, deputy head of the school.

Melding Everyday Experiences with Olympic Ideals

At the Church of Sant'Antonio, when children first arrived, there were no bustling cheers or applause usually associated with sports arenas. Instead, they found themselves sitting quietly, listening intently as basketball player Giordano Bortolani, alumnus of the youth system of Olimpia Milano, shared how his experiences bridged sports and community service.

Bortolani's journey from a spirited youth to a celebrated athlete highlights the transformative power of oratories—where children take part in various recreational activities. “Sometimes, we would go to pray between training sessions,” shared Bortolani. This blend of spiritual nourishment and athletic ambition seems to have sparked a unique sense of community and commitment among the youth.

High school students have created graphic designs representing Olympic principles, showcasing their interpretations of sportsmanship and teamwork. Massimo Aquino, president of CSI, reflects on this, “For generations, Italians have grown up learning the values of life in oratories, chasing after a ball.”
