A National Crisis: The Worst Flooding in a Generation

Tens of thousands are stranded and displaced in Mozambique following unprecedented flooding that has devastated entire communities. This crisis, the worst the country has seen in decades, has led to a frantic response from not just local authorities, but also international teams from Brazil, South Africa, and the UK stepping in to assist with rescue operations.

"For me, this is the first time I have experienced a calamity of this magnitude. Elders say a similar disaster took place in the 1990s," reflects Tomaz Antonio Mlau, a mechanic from Marracuene.

The Human Cost

As flood waters surged following relentless rain, families found themselves clinging to rooftops and treetops, desperate for help. Mlau and his family woke up to find their home overwhelmed by the Inkomati River's outburst, forcing them to abandon all belongings. They hurriedly boarded a rescue boat to a temporary shelter where approximately 4,000 others have sought refuge.

“When the rescue boat came hours later, we did not hesitate to board it and escape to safety in Marracuene town,” Mlau says, emphasizing the heartbreaking choice to leave their lives behind in search of safety.

The Response from the Ground

Areas most affected include south and central Mozambique, with reports indicating that over 650,000 people have been directly impacted by the flooding, and at least 12 lives claimed thus far. Local authorities, including Marracuene's mayor, Shafee Sidat, highlight the massive challenge still in play as they account for those remaining in risk areas, hesitating to evacuate.

“We still have people to rescue who refuse to abandon the risk areas. We reckon that more than 10,000 people are affected in Marracuene,” Mayor Sidat stated during his visit to shelters in the area.

Challenges and Future Outlook

The situation is compounded by reports that heavy rainfall is predicted to continue in the region, with fears that a dam release in neighbouring South Africa could exacerbate Morris' plight. As floodwaters threaten to swamp more farmland and homes, the rehabilitation of daily life may seem a distant dream for many. Farmers like Francisco Fernando Chivindzi bemoan the loss of entire livelihoods, stating, “We lost everything in the floodwaters — houses, livestock, clothing, and our farms are underwater.”

As with many regions struggling against climate change's far-reaching effects, residents are left questioning their future. “Even if waters subside, I am not sure I'll go back there,” Mlau admits, reflecting a sentiment prevalent among distressed evacuees.

#Community and Humanitarian Efforts

While rescue teams work tirelessly to reach those stranded, a humanitarian call is urgently needed for food and supplies in shelters. Survivors report a dire lack of resources. Aninha Vicente Mivinga recalls the painful experiences of her children going without food on the first day she found shelter.

“It was painful to see children sleeping without anything to eat,” she lamented.

The future holds uncertainty, yet there is hope. Education Minister Samaria Tovela has indicated that considerations are being taken to reschedule the academic calendar to facilitate the use of schools as shelters for longer durations. In a nation resilient through adversity, the spirit of solidarity can pave ways to rebuilding, but only with attentive and sustained external support.
