The Dawn of a New Era

In the windswept town of Medina, North Dakota, transformative changes are brewing within the girls basketball program of Medina/Pingree-Buchanan. With the departure of former coach Cory Mack, Jeremy Schmidt has stepped up, ready to make his mark. While coaching can feel like an insurmountable task, Schmidt brings with him not only experience but a deep connection to the community and the athletes.

“I kind of waited and waited,” Schmidt recalled about his decision to take the plunge into coaching this team. “Then I threw my name into the ring.”

After a careful contemplation, Schmidt received the life-changing call in May officially appointing him as head coach. Armed with a wealth of coaching experience, particularly at lower levels, he has been a familiar face to many of the girls. “A lot of these girls I've been coaching all the way up from the third grade,” Schmidt said, referencing his longstanding relationships with athletes now stepping onto the varsity stage.

Building from the Ground Up

The Thunder come off a challenging season, having recorded a mere three wins. Schmidt's vision? Take the team to the regional tournament, a goal that necessitates determination and perseverance, especially with only 13 players out for the team this year. “We are going to be young,” Schmidt acknowledged, noting the decisions made by some former players to step away from the sport. However, he's optimistic about the return of key players like Brynn Sorenson, Lauren Markegard, and Teryn Mittlider, along with junior Violet Bohl, who missed her sophomore year.

The New Talent

This season's noteworthy aspect? The inclusion of five eager eighth graders poised to make their varsity debuts. Despite their youth, several have played extensively, bringing essential experience to the team.

“We're still going to be young,” Schmidt stated. “But several of them have played a lot of basketball.”

Transitioning to a faster-paced style of play compared to Mack's approach has presented a learning curve for the team. Schmidt feels optimistic, attributing the team's progress to their summer league participation. “It's just getting them used to playing how I want them to play,” he explained, reflecting his commitment to developing their skills and fostering a positive team culture.

As the season commenced on December 2 against Maple River, Schmidt emphasizes not just skill but the importance of fun and enjoyment in the game. “We want to play hard in practice and in summer league, and I think they will enjoy it, especially if we can get to a place where all cylinders are clicking,” he said passionately.
