Championship Night Unveiled
What a night it was at the UCCU Event Center! The atmosphere crackled with energy as teams from across the state showcased their dedication and talent in the inaugural 5A state cheerleading championships. Olympus High and Maple Mountain stood out, not just for their choreography but for their heart and spirit.
For Olympus, this victory marked a significant milestone. It was their first state championship since the UHSAA began sanctioning cheerleading in 2023. Coach Hailie Caso noted, “In what was a rebuilding year for us, we faced adversity all season long—setbacks, injuries and challenges. Yet, despite it all, they stayed focused, trusted the process, and their perseverance paid off.”

The Thrill of Competition
The competition was fierce. Olympus dethroned the three-time defending champions, Salem Hills, who had dominated the all-girls division for the past three years. Olympus not only captured the title but also placed in the top three of all three categories: Dance, Cheer, and Show. Their mesmerizing performance in the Dance category truly set them apart;

All-Girls Division Breakdown
In the all-girls category, the stakes were high. Olympus prevailed in the Dance category while Salem Hills secured the top spot in Cheer, followed by Fremont taking the Show category. This year's championship was not just about skill; it highlighted the relentless human spirit, particularly as Olympus faced a formidable foe in Fremont, who finished as the runner-up.
On the flip side, in the co-ed division, Maple Mountain emerged victorious, clinching the title against Northridge and Box Elder. Under the guidance of their coaches, they demonstrated remarkable teamwork and strategic execution, placing first in the Show category and grabbing overall glory.
Celebrating the Winners
As cheers resonated through Orem, both Olympus and Maple Mountain encapsulated the essence of competitive cheerleading: unity, strength, and resilience. “We knew Cedar Valley was a strong competitor, but by moving up to 6A, they opened the door for us to claim our first title,” shared a Maple Mountain representative, clearly basking in the accomplishment.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on this monumental night in high school competitive cheer, it's clear that the future is bright for both teams. With a new wave of talent and determination, I can't help but anticipate how they will shape the landscape of cheerleading in Utah. The stage is set for another thrilling season ahead as they both aim to raise the bar even higher.
With the echoes of cheers still vibrating in the arena, we can only wonder: what will these teams accomplish next? As the journey continues, one thing remains certain: the heart and talent of high school cheer are flourishing.
