Pearl-Cohn and Station Camp Shine at TSSAA State Track Championships

Introduction to the Championships

The TSSAA track and field state championships commenced on May 19 at the University of Tennessee's Tom Black Track, gathering the finest athletes from around the state. This year's event was marked by standout performances, especially from the Pearl-Cohn Firebirds and Station Camp Bison, both of whom displayed incredible talent across various events.

A Near Sweep by Pearl-Cohn and Station Camp

Pearl-Cohn and Station Camp came remarkably close to capturing the team championships across both Class A and AA categories. The Pearl-Cohn girls soared to victory with 88 points in Class A while their boys secured a solid third-place finish with 69.5 points. Meanwhile, the Station Camp girls topped Class AA with an impressive score of 96 points, and the boys finished as state runners-up, trailing Millington Central by a narrow margin with 68 points.

Chyna Harris Rucker from Pearl-Cohn proved to be a standout, bringing home three state titles. She dominated the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter dash, showcasing her athleticism and speed throughout the day.

Highlight Performances

The championships were notable for several individual triumphs. Rucker clinched first in the 100 meters with a time of 11.45 seconds, followed by victories in the 200 meters and 400 meters with times of 23.53 and 53.06 seconds respectively. Both Pearl-Cohn's boys and girls teams also excelled in the 4x400 relays.

On the field side, a remarkable performance came from Chester Burgess, who won first place in the boys' discus throw, achieving a remarkable distance of 169-feet, 9-inches. Station Camp, excelling in field events, saw Braden Lawler winning the girls' pole vault at 11-0, while Gavin Quinn topped the boys' pole vault at 15-6. Their athletes showcased consistent performance, with the Bison capturing five second-place finishes across track events.

The Spierdowis Siblings Shine for Gibbs

The Gibbs boys and girls teams achieved a commendable fourth place finish in Class AA, largely credited to the remarkable performances by the Spierdowis siblings. Junior Waylon Spierdowis brought home three state titles, including wins in the decathlon, as well as the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, clocking in at 14.17 seconds and 38.12 seconds, respectively.

Freshman Rebekah Spierdowis made her debut with a first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles, recording a time of 43.44 seconds, and she also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles and third in the triple jump. Their commitment and skill significantly aided Gibbs' overall performance.

Millington Central's Strong Showing

Millington Central's boys not only captured the Class AA team championship with a total score of 92 points but also secured their third consecutive TSSAA team title. The Trojans excelled through stellar performances from senior Rodney Gude, who clinched victories in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters, clocking impressive times of 10.63 and 21.49 seconds, respectively.

The Millington boys also showcased their strength in relays, finishing first in both the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay races, solidifying their title and demonstrating a deep roster of talent and teamwork.
