From the Rubble to the Slopes

Sixteen years ago, Ralf Etienne faced an unimaginable crisis. Buried upside down beneath the ruins of a collapsed building, he embodied resilience in the aftermath of Haiti's catastrophic 2010 earthquake. It took him hours to be rescued and weeks to receive medical attention, ultimately leading to the amputation of his left leg. "I decided that if I survived this tragedy, I would live a life to serve people," Etienne shared.

A New Beginning

Prior to the earthquake, Ralf was already on an inspiring path as a young entrepreneur. By the age of 16, he had created a media empire in Haiti, launching his own magazine, radio show, and production company. But the devastating earthquake shifted the trajectory of his life, leading him to America. Here, he not only received a prosthetic leg but also sought education in Indiana, where his journey of potential began anew.

For Ralf, remaining connected to Haiti remained paramount. Despite settling into his new life in the U.S., he dedicated much of his time to humanitarian efforts. From distributing thousands of eyeglasses to underserved communities to repairing homes ravaged by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, his commitment was unwavering.

Pursuing Freedom on the Slopes

It was only two years ago that Ralf discovered skiing, a sport that soon became a profound source of joy and empowerment. "I touched the snow, and I never turned back," he recalls, signalling the start of a new chapter in his life. Skiing transformed for him; it transitioned from a mere sport to a potent symbol of hope, embodying everything the Paralympics stand for.

"At first skiing meant freedom to me, and then I realised it was inspiration. That is what the Paralympics are about," he declared.

Pushing Boundaries

Despite hurdles, including immigration restrictions that complicated his training regime, Ralf made the audacious decision to relocate to London. Supported by Bank of America, he sought proximity to Europe's mountains, where he could hone his skills for the upcoming Games. Ralf made significant sacrifices to balance his commitment to his career as an investment banker and his aspirations as an athlete.

His dedication culminated in a remarkable moment: after just 80 days of skiing, Ralf raced at the Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympics. While the technical aspects of his performance—resulting in a disqualification during the giant slalom—are secondary to the overwhelming narrative of his journey, it was clear that Ralf's mere participation reshaped perceptions.

That's the most beautiful sentence I have heard in a long time," he exclaimed, emphasizing not just personal achievement, but broader representation for his country. "I want to inspire the Haitian youth, to show them that from the ruins, anything is possible," Ralf passionately stated.
