"We have to get Maggie," Kelly recalls. "It will anchor the family with real siblings, and Maggie will be this great foundation for Jake."

The release of The Philosophy of Time Travel, Kelly's debut novel, marks a new chapter in his creative journey. The 800-page tome continues the story from where the film left off and serves as a foundation for what could be a sequel.

"It's been very inspiring for me to remain focused on continuing the journey that began 25 years ago, on my own creative terms," Kelly says. "This film has defined my entire career, but at the same time, it's set a benchmark in the sense of the movies that I want to continue to make."

Setting the Scene: The 1980s Aesthetic

One of the most striking elements of Donnie Darko is its evocative portrayal of 1980s suburbia. The challenge was significant, especially considering that production occurred in 2000, while aiming to capture the look and feel of 1988.

"We wanted it to feel subtle," Kelly explains. "We didn't want a lot of big '80s hair or a 'Beat It' jacket. We wanted it to feel authentic, not kitschy." Costume designer April Ferry was instrumental in creating that look, ensuring the characters' wardrobes reflected the era without leaning too heavily into nostalgia.

Soundtracks and Symbolism

The film's soundtrack, which included post-punk and new wave hits like Tears for Fears' "Head Over Heels" and Joy Division's “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” was carefully curated to support the narrative. The musical choices were not only for atmosphere but also to mirror the emotional beats of the story.

"I wasn't thinking that deep," Kelly admits, laughing. "I was just like, 'I love this song.'" The soundtrack helped cement Donnie Darko's identity, making it more than just a visual experience but a deeply immersive one.

Unseen Scenes and Unexpected Turns

Not all elements from the original script made it to the screen. One such scene involved Donnie and Gretchen going to see C.H.U.D., a low-budget horror film from 1985. Licensing issues led to a creative detour—replacing the film with The Evil Dead and even featuring a marquee for The Last Temptation of Christ.

"It was like a deus ex machina in the form of Sam Raimi," Kelly recalls. "That led to the whole Evil Dead sequence in the movie, that was so perfect."

The Line That Defines an Era

Some dialogue sticks with viewers long after the credits roll. One memorable line from actor Beth Grant—"Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion"—has become a cultural reference point. "It's so ridiculous," Kelly notes, "but it's one of those lines that has had a surprising impact."

Looking Forward: New Projects and Influences

Reflecting on today's landscape, Kelly is cautious about how social media impacts creative freedom. "You kind of try to stay away from it," he says. "Any filmmaker that gets too caught up in online discourse can only have a negative impact on one's art." Instead, he finds inspiration in films like Obsession, Ari Aster's work, and Jane Schoenbrun's cinematic style.

His dream project? A Rod Serling biopic, told through the lens of fantasy and science fiction. "It's an expensive movie to make," he admits, "but given the fantasy elements and the period elements and the scope, it would be a very ambitious project."

As Donnie Darko enters its 25th year, Kelly's vision for it continues to evolve. His novel is not just a continuation but an extension of his artistic mission—a reminder that great stories can transcend time and media.
