Wyatt Rouamba's Triumph

On June 5, Wyatt Rouamba electrified the crowd at the D2 triple jump finals. The senior from Xavier High School kicked off his competition with a remarkable leap of 47 feet, 11.5 inches—a jump that not only secured him a gold medal but also reset the D2 state record previously set at 47-9.5 by Gavin Sargeant.

"We've been working up to this point in the season all year," Rouamba reflected, exuding confidence. "I knew I had to set the tone with the first jump so I just went out there and did what I do."

After his initial leap, Rouamba continued to impress, holding off competition from Martin Luther's Elijah Watkins (44-0.5) and Lancaster's Taylor Williams (44-0.25).

A Champion's Mindset

Rouamba further shared his mental preparation for the state meet, highlighting the importance of composure:

"It's another opportunity to jump. I calmed my nerves and asked God for some peace and forgiveness. My coach got me into a perfect headspace with our drills, which truly made a difference. Once we hit state, I knew: I can do this, I just have to believe in myself."

Trey Zemke Soars to Victory

In the pole vault, Trey Zemke from Winneconne wrapped up his high school career in style by clinching the D2 title. Clearing a height of 15 feet, Zemke was the only competitor to successfully jump above 14-6. His final triumph came on the third attempt at 15-0, marking a significant improvement from his runner-up finish last year at 14-6.

"Super satisfying!" exclaimed Zemke. "I got a personal record last year and knew I could get that 15 this season; it's been my aim all year."

The growth in performance throughout the season was notable for Zemke. He remarked on the adrenaline rush of competing solo against the bar, which is an exhilarating yet intense experience for any athlete.

Competitive Spirit Rises

Winneconne's Hudson Samolinski spoke candidly about his own mixed emotions following a second-place finish in the D2 discus:

"I didn't perform my best. I felt like nerves got to me. It's different when you've been to state before, but the experience can still overwhelm you."

Nonetheless, Samolinski demonstrated a competitor's resolve and was eager for his upcoming performance in the shot put.
