Sam Cozens: Breaking Barriers on Snow as a Visually Impaired Skier

Chasing a Paralympic Dream

Meet Sam Cozens, a 19-year-old skier from Hethersett, Norfolk, who has spent most of his life defying the odds. Diagnosed with nystagmus at four months old, Cozens has spent the majority of his journey navigating life with limited peripheral vision and challenges with depth perception. Yet, this hasn't stopped him. Instead, it has fueled his passion for skiing, a sport he embraced from the tender age of five.

Cozens learned how to ski on a dry slope near Norwich, where he quickly advanced from a novice to a formidable competitor. After years of dedication, he earned a spot on the ParalympicsGB team and is set to make his mark at the upcoming Winter Paralympics.

Facing Challenges Head-On

The journey has not been without its difficulties. Living with nystagmus means that Cozens has to rely on a guide while skiing. Teaming up with Adam Hall, his guide, they've developed a dynamic communication system through helmet headsets which allows Hall to inform Cozens instantly about any changes on the course. “We've built a great bond over the years. He's a bit like a slightly annoying older brother, but we work well together,” Cozens shares, reflecting the camaraderie that underpins their successful partnership.

The Dream of a Medal

As the Winter Paralympics approach, Cozens speaks candidly about his goals. “The biggest achievement would be a medal,” he emphasizes. Although he aspires to finish in the top 10, for him, even participating in the Games is a culmination of years of hard work and persistence. His mother, Beki Cozens, describes witnessing her son's journey as "mind-blowing," sharing the emotional rollercoaster that comes with supporting an athlete with disabilities.

Beki reveals the lengths they have gone to nurture Sam's talent, stating, “About 80% of my life has been fighting for different things for him to be able to do.” From financial hurdles to logistical challenges, her commitment illustrates the unyielding spirit behind many sports stories.
