Season Bests: East Grand Forks Golf Teams Ready for Section Play

A Golfing Breakthrough for East Grand Forks

On May 29 in Grand Forks, both East Grand Forks Senior High golf teams achieved remarkable milestones, setting their best scores of the season just days before heading to the Minnesota Section 8AA meet in Bemidji on June 1-2. The Green Wave boys clinched victory in the North Subsection in Roseau, while the girls secured a commendable third place finish. Both teams shot their season lows, a testament to their consistent progress.

Highlighting the Boys' Performance

Leading the charge for the boys was Gavin Rude, who finished his round with an impressive score of 66, followed closely by teammate Brody Johnson at 70. This tremendous performance not only earned them individual accolades but also displayed their commitment to excellence throughout the season.

"It has been a good battle between us, Warroad, Roseau, and Thief River Falls here and there," expressed EGF coach Kyle Thompson. "As we approached the subsection, I reminded the team to focus on being better. We rose to the occasion, achieving a team score of 289, the lowest of my four years coaching here."

Looking Ahead: The Challenge of Detroit Lakes

As they approach the section meet, Rude and Johnson, both of whom participated in the state meet last year, are keen to return. However, they face stiff competition from the state's top-ranked team, Detroit Lakes. Coach Thompson reflected on the challenge:

"Everyone is chasing Detroit Lakes. They are the defending state champions and return five of their top players from last year. Our goal is to score around 300 or better to put some pressure on them going into Day 2 of the meet."

Girls Team Poised for Success

The Green Wave girls team also showcased their talent, shooting a season-low 364 to qualify for the section meet. Freshman Paige Lindgren shined with a score of 84, securing a third-place finish among her team. Fellow teammates included eighth-grader Jadyn Thompson and juniors Tori Gervais and Briana Hallin, all contributing to the team's success.

"This was a fantastic team effort to qualify," said Senior High coach Paula Devine. "The girls played solid and showed tenacity, bringing their scores down each week as we prepared for sections."

Beyond Golf: Local Sports Updates

In addition to golf, I want to share some noteworthy happenings in local sports. UND volleyball coach David Nguyen has been busy building his roster, recently adding Mercyhurst transfer Andrea Zaric and Maryland-Eastern Shore standout Lilliana Montes. Zaric, with her significant collegiate experience, brings a wealth of skill, having amassed 639 kills, while Montes, a recent all-MEAC second-team selection, is expected to make a significant impact.

Moreover, on the track and field front, UND's Jadyn Keeler finished an impressive third in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA West Regional, advancing her to the national championship, a landmark achievement that no one should overlook.

In another development, standout softball player Jocelyn Berg from Grand Forks Red River has re-opened her recruitment following coaching changes at UAB. Meanwhile, Grand Forks Central's Piper Severson has committed to playing volleyball at Mayville State, marking a new chapter in her athletic career.
