A Promising Start for the Blue Jays

Dec. 5—JAMESTOWN — The Jamestown High School gymnastics team kicked off their season with a victory that showcased not just their talents, but their spirit. Under the guidance of head coach Bre Carlson, the Blue Jays approached this season with humility but also undeniable ambition. 

"It would be great if we could get second at State this year," Carlson stated. "Winning it all is the goal, but we know Dickinson is a powerhouse."

Indeed, the numbers are against the Blue Jays, with a roster of only eight gymnasts. But as the coach aptly noted, "This team may be a lot smaller than we are used to, but they are ready to show they are just as capable as any other team we have had."

The Impact of Key Departures

Last season's star gymnast, Julia Skari, continues to be felt this year, having dominated the all-around rankings for several years. Her absence leaves a significant void, and Carlson acknowledges it with respect. "Obviously, it will be different this year without Julia, as she was one of our top scorers," she said, reflecting on the legacy Skari left behind.

However, seniors Sutton Van Gilder and Aubrey Krapp have stepped up to fill the gap left. Van Gilder, a two-time all-stater, has been working diligently over the off-season to bring something new to her performance. "Our fans can expect a solid group," Van Gilder assured, emphasizing the determination among her teammates.

First Meet Success

The first opportunity to gauge the team's capabilities came at the season opener in Aberdeen. The result? A surprise victory that Coach Carlson wouldn't soon forget. "The girls actually surprised themselves with how high their team score was. They surprised me too — in a good way, of course," she noted with pride.

Despite initial nerves and a lack of experience, the team performed well across events, taking three of the top five placements in floor routines. Carlson had high hopes for vault performances, and the team met those expectations, achieving commendable results even under pressure.

"We had a pretty rocky road on bars so far this season... but apparently being a little anxious was the trick as Jamestown swept the top four places," Carlson remarked. This illustrates a deep insight into the psychology of sports, where pressure can either paralyze or galvanize.

What's Next for the Blue Jays?

As the Blue Jays turn their attention toward their next competition scheduled for December 11 at Bismarck Gymnastics Academy, the lessons learned during their first meet will undoubtedly serve them well. "I think the win today is just what we needed to get good energy going at practice next week before we head to Bismarck to compete against every other team in the state on Thursday," Carlson stated, radiating enthusiasm.

But the Blue Jays aren't just content with participating; they want to compete with honor and purpose. Carlson has emphasized their role as serious competitors in the state, and this win allows them to march forward with vigor. "It's a little bit of a smaller team than the last few years, but I am not too worried about it. Most of the girls have been coming in throughout the summer and the fall which has been super helpful," she assured, showcasing her trust in these talented gymnasts.
