Shops like Celestial Collectibles in Warrington have reported thefts worth tens of thousands of pounds. In just a matter of minutes, thieves can ransack a shop, in what has become a disturbing pattern witnessed in other cities, including Rugby, Bristol, Bournemouth, Peterborough, and Nottingham.

“Some of these thieves, they don't know what they're taking,” says Roy Raftery, a trading card expert at Stanley Gibbons Baldwins.

The Allure of Value

While Pokémon has been a beloved collectible for 30 years, the COVID-19 pandemic has revived interest in trading cards. Online auction houses now fetch immense sums for rare cards. In a recent sale, auctioneer Stanley Gibbons Baldwins recorded over £1.5 million in Pokémon assets exchanged in just one event. Even more jaw-dropping was the auction of an ultra-rare Pikachu card, which sold for a record-breaking $16.5 million earlier this year.

This frenzy has made Pokémon cards not just a hobby but a serious investment, promoting both collector passion and criminal opportunism.

The financial motivations behind these crimes are further underscored by the staggering amounts reported stolen. In one incident, shop owner Chris Grundy shared his experience: “They pulled up outside the shop in a transit van, they moved the cameras up with brushes and knocked the glass panel through. Then in pretty much four minutes, they ransacked the whole shop.” His shop claims a theft of approximately £40,000 worth of stock, primarily graded cards and sealed packs.

Other retailers have faced similar fates: Trove UK in Bournemouth lost £30,000 worth of goods, and another shop reported an £80,000 theft. Detective Inspector Liam Keenan from Cheshire Constabulary acknowledged the wave of crime, stating, “While we've only had one incident here in Cheshire, we are aware of others across the country.”

“It was amazing,” Chris said. “A few younger kids coming in with their cards, worth maybe only £3, but to us, it meant so much.”

Shops like Celestial Collectibles have undergone significant upgrades. “We've massively upgraded our security; it's just needed now,” Chris noted.
