After a rocky period marked by app failures and customer backlash in 2024, Sonos is returning with renewed focus on innovation and user experience. The company's new initiative includes a major software update called Sonos 27, a refreshed suite of hardware, and the strategic infusion of artificial intelligence across its platform.

This is not just another product cycle for Sonos—it's an effort to redefine its identity from being simply a manufacturer of speakers into something more holistic: an audio operating system. The Sonos 27 App: A Fresh Start

One of the most critical components of this transformation is the Sonos 27 app, a complete overhaul designed to regain user trust after past missteps. This iteration was developed through extensive customer feedback, including community input from platforms like Reddit.

Key enhancements include improved tab navigation, better room sorting capabilities, and updated volume controls directly within the application. Additionally, upcoming features such as system health views will provide diagnostics for troubleshooting connection issues with each device.

Generative AI Integration: Sonos 27voice

The most significant technological advancement is the introduction of Sonos 27voice, a generative AI assistant integrated into the platform. Users can now interact with their Sonos system through voice commands, requesting music based on mood or even leveraging external AI services like ChatGPT via the Model Context Protocol.

This feature allows for a level of personalization that goes beyond traditional smart speaker functionality. For example, users can create custom agents that perform specific tasks—such as activating speakers in certain rooms at designated times. The flexibility extends to voice customization, where one might choose their kitchen assistant to sound like a French chef or their bathroom speaker to speak like a pirate.

"Obviously AI is something that's very hot these days, clearly," said Sid Patel, vice president of software at Sonos. "So we have integrated various pieces of AI into our system."

Compatibility and Limitations

It's important to note that not all existing Sonos products will be able to access these new AI features. The Sonos 27 operating system is compatible only with the latest S2 app, which excludes older S1 hardware.

"Sonos 27 is designed to take advantage of newer hardware capabilities, so not every product will support every new feature," a Sonos representative explained. "We want to be transparent about those limitations while continuing to support products with security and ongoing updates for as long as the hardware allows."

Sonos Fabric: The Backbone of Connectivity

Another foundational element of Sonos 27 is its new networking technology, officially named Sonos Fabric. This is described as "the magic that has existed for what Sonos was built on"—the seamless integration and communication between multiple speakers within a home audio setup.

Two major upgrades to Sonos Fabric include:

• Portable Surround: Allows devices to be moved from room to room while maintaining sync with the rest of the system.
• Headphone Linking: Enables switching audio between speakers and headphones without disruption.

New Hardware: The Sonos Ace Ultra and Beam Ultra

Sonos continues its expansion into personal audio with two new products: the Sonos Ace Ultra, an upgraded version of their earlier headphone line, and the Sonos Beam Ultra, a next-generation soundbar.

The Ace Ultra boasts 35 hours of battery life and connects via USB-C and 3.5mm jack, but more importantly, it integrates seamlessly with Sonos Fabric, allowing for playback switching between headphones and speakers with a single button press.

"With a single push of a button, you'll be able to suck music into your headphones," said Patel.

Sonos Beam Ultra

The Beam Ultra is an evolution of the original Sonos Beam, featuring nine drivers—four more than previous models—with upward-firing drivers that bounce sound off ceilings for enhanced acoustics. Notably, it includes AI speech enhancement technology that improves dialogue clarity during loud scenes.

It supports multiple connection methods including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and wired HDMI eARC, ensuring compatibility with modern entertainment systems.
