On September 11, 2001, the United States was not just shaken—it was shattered. I stood in the Capitol basement that day, listening to Tom Ridge warn us that this was not an isolated incident but a new phase in a long war. The terrorists had already struck before—Beirut, Lockerbie, the World Trade Center bombings of 1993, embassy attacks in Kenya and Tanzania, and the USS Cole bombing in Yemen. Yet, something unprecedented unfolded that Tuesday morning when the towers fell. That day, we witnessed not just a tragedy but a moment that redefined our national character.

The Courageous Spirit That Emerged

From the first responders who charged into the Twin Towers to the passengers who fought back against the hijackers on Flight 93, America's defenders showed us what it means to stand firm in the face of evil. But more than that, they revealed a country unafraid to wage war on terror, not just react to it.

"We resolved that we would no longer simply bring terrorists to justice after they attacked us. We would find them before they could strike, take the fight to them abroad, and build new defenses here at home."

This transformation was not immediate. It required a shift in mindset—from a reactive approach to a proactive one. And it was the men and women who answered the call that made it possible. Nearly three million Americans deployed in wars following 9/11. More than 7,000 gave their lives, and tens of thousands were wounded. Their legacy is immeasurable.

A Legacy of Vigilance

Twenty-five years later, the peace we enjoy—free from the constant threat of another catastrophic attack—is a direct result of their sacrifice. ISIS was not just defeated; it was dismantled. American forces and allies liberated nearly 110,000 square kilometers of territory and freed millions from its brutal rule.

But heroes are not only found on distant battlefields. They also serve in law enforcement, disrupting plans at home, standing watch along our borders, and ensuring air travel remains secure. Their greatest accomplishment is what did not happen: another 9/11, not because our enemies stopped trying, but because America's defenders stopped them cold.

The Living Legacy

In New York City, 58 children of FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice have grown up to join the same department their fathers served. Their story is more than a tribute—it's proof that freedom isn't just fought for once; it's passed down through generations.

This generation of patriots—those who served overseas and those who stood watch at home—earned the right to peace. And now, as we honor the fallen, we must also commit ourselves to remaining vigilant. Our founders taught us that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. The Responsibility We Bear

Let me be clear: honoring the heroes of 9/11 means more than memorializing their names. It means remembering their legacy in action. It means supporting those who continue to serve, whether in uniform or behind a desk at the FBI, on a battlefield, or patrolling our streets. And it means never allowing ourselves to become complacent.
