Eight months after its formation, TikTok's U.S. arm has officially joined Lantern, a cross-platform child safety initiative launched by a coalition of major tech companies. Lantern, established in 2023, represents a pioneering effort among social media platforms to collaboratively combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. By enabling platforms to share data and insights without compromising user privacy, Lantern aims to create a more robust defense system against digital predators. The program currently includes participants such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, Apple, Discord, Snap, Twitch, Reddit, Roblox, and others.

TikTok's Involvement: A Strategic Move

In addition to joining the initiative, TikTok has pledged $2 million to NCMEC's efforts to modernize its CyberTipline. This investment is part of a larger project expected to take three years and require a total of $10 million in funding. Partners like AWS, Microsoft, and Palantir are also contributing resources.

"This investment will help NCMEC deploy advanced search, automation, and analysis tools to detect harm sooner, cut manual processing times in half, and accelerate actionable reports to law enforcement when a child's safety is on the line," TikTok stated in a press release.
