At the 79th Annual Tony Awards held on Sunday, Broadway's most prestigious theatre awards ceremony saw a historic moment as veteran actor John Lithgow claimed his sixth Tony Award at age 80, making him the oldest male actor ever to receive the honor. "Two Tony bookends with 53 years between them," Lithgow noted in his acceptance speech. "In those years, I have worked with hundreds of just fantastic theatre artists. I've had dozens and dozens of ecstatic moments on the stage, but I have to tell you right now, this moment has got to be one of the best."

The milestone victory for Lithgow was particularly poignant given his long-standing presence in Broadway circles. His first Tony came over five decades ago for a role in Changing Rooms, a production from 1972. This latest win not only underscored his enduring talent but also served as a testament to the evolution of theatrical performance.

British actress Lesley Manville also made history by winning her first Tony Award for her portrayal of Jocasta in Oedipus, marking a significant achievement for the acclaimed actress who has worked extensively in British theatre. Death of a Salesman Dominates Awards Night

A revival of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman emerged as the night's biggest winner, securing six awards including Best Revival of a Play. The production's success highlighted the enduring power of Miller's works and the critical acclaim they continue to receive.

The play also earned Laurie Metcalf the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Play for her powerful performance as Linda Loman. Metcalf, known for her roles in Roseanne and Lady Bird, paid tribute to her college theatre colleagues—Gary Sinise, Moira Harris, Al Wilder, Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney, and John Malkovich—who she credited with shaping her career path.

"When I was in college, I met six fellow students in the theatre department. We worked really hard to amuse each other, and I still consider them family - and I still draw on lessons that I learned from them," Metcalf said.

Rebuilding Trust Through Art

The night's ceremony also marked a symbolic comeback for controversial producer Scott Rudin, whose company had faced allegations of bullying and abusive behavior towards employees. After stepping back from Broadway in 2021, Rudin's production of Death of a Salesman finally earned the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play—making it one of the most notable awards of the evening.

Rudin did not attend the ceremony but was represented by actor Nathan Lane, who paid tribute to the genius of Arthur Miller and his monumental masterpiece. The award's acceptance underscored the ongoing efforts within the industry to rebuild trust through the power of artistic excellence.

The evening also featured wins for several other notable productions. Ragtime, a musical depicting the American dream at the dawn of the 20th century, took home two awards including Best Leading Actor in a Musical, awarded to Joshua Henry.

Comedic musical Schmigadoon!, adapted from the Apple TV series, also made waves with two wins. Producer Christine Schwarzman jokingly credited Apple TV's cancellation of the third season of the show as a catalyst for its Broadway success: "I think I should start by thanking Apple TV for cancelling the third season of Schmigadoon!, the TV show, because without them dropping it, we couldn't have picked it up and run with it."

Additionally, Cats: The Jellicle Ball took home three trophies, while feminist drama Liberation won Best Play after recently receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The musical The Lost Boys also secured two awards, including Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for Shoshana Bean.

A Night of Celebration and Recognition

The ceremony was hosted by singer Pink, who kicked off the night with a vibrant rendition of "Lady Marmalade," reworking the lyrics to namecheck several nominees. She called herself "Broadway's biggest fan" and expressed her admiration for the hardworking individuals behind the scenes.

"I wanted to pay tribute to 'the hardest-working people in showbiz,'" Pink said.
