As we inch closer to the 2026-27 season, an unprecedented change in youth football is set to unfold. The Football Association (FA) will introduce a controversial format for under-7s: games without goalkeepers. “This is probably catastrophic for English goalkeeping,” says Nick Eyre, head of goalkeeping at Chelmsford City Football Club. “You cannot play football without goalkeepers unless we're going to allow it to become like basketball, where it's end-to-end and high-scoring games.”

Commencing this September, children aged under-7 will participate in three-a-side matches on smaller pitches. The proposed rules include:

• Carousel-style rotation between pitches

Goalkeepers will only be introduced at the under-8 level, with full 11-a-side formats commencing at under-14s. This elongation before children step into standard football roles has sparked concern regarding their development.

Voices of Concern

Eyre's apprehensions are not isolated. He warns that young players with a natural affinity for defense—or those who simply enjoy the responsibilities of goalkeeping—could lose interest in football altogether. The new structure might drive them toward alternative sports.

“We risk losing those who are hand-eye oriented,” he cautions. “Maybe they go and play different sports.”

Alternative Perspectives

Conversely, some individuals believe that the new rules warrant a trial period. Chris Rowlett, a former coach at Billericay Town, noted that many children appreciate the smaller games. In his view:

“On the technical side, I think it's going to do them a world of good, as they acquire skills with their feet moving up through the age groups.”

Rowlett posits that shifting to non-competitive soccer can alleviate pressure often imposed by parents concerned about results. Terry Claydon, another coach at Grays Athletic, however, vehemently disagrees with this new directive, calling it “absolutely crazy.” He shared his belief that wide-reaching repercussions could arise, potentially ostracizing young players looking to express their passion for the sport.

The Research Behind the Rules

The FA's decision stems from the Future of Youth Football Review, which compiled an array of insights over three years. They investigated 400 grassroots matches from under-6 to under-14, ultimately finding that many children were unengaged during games.

The FA emphasized this initiative reflects its evidence-backed commitment to reforming how young players experience football, intending to spur more intensity and engagement. But the questions linger: Will this approach truly nurture the next generation of players, or will it diminish interest in a specialization like goalkeeping?
